More seriously, as I have opined before, I would restrict the
wearing of FIFA badges to International or European Club
Competitions. Wearing them for domestic matches smacks too much
of a 'caste' system for my liking and as one who has often had
to wear " quaint and curious costumes" ( Tom Lehrer ) I think
there is rather a lot of nonsense about it. I suppose if you are
into rank and all that goes with it, then the badges and tokens
are important. I see them more as a sign of allegiance like a
County Badge or a Referees Association Badge.
In the olden days there were certain referees, Gordon Hill being
a prime example, who rarely wore any badge and that itself was a
statement while others wore two and on one occasion I have
actually seen three badges worn.

Lots of people are saying that this ref and that ref will be
next to a fifa badge. Lots bigging up Rob Jones. Just watching
him ref Newcastle v Leicester. You can tell he is new to SG1. He
is IMO struggling to adapt. Very one paced. Has had to stop play
as the ball has hit him twice. Also narrowly missed him a few
times. Poor positioning. Before people put a fifa badge on him,
he seriously needs to justify his PL one and at the moment he
isn’t.

With the arrival of the new UEFA match official badge, the FIFA
badge will be limited to FIFA competitions and friendly
internationals.
In this country should be limited to FA competitions alongside
or instead of the 3 lions

Italian officials don’t portray the Fifa badge on their shirts
when I’ve observed Serie A, albeit sporadically.
Of course here the FA badge is second rate to the majestic white
badge given to officials whom are given them like confetti.

Good for the Italians. In years gone by an FA Badge was highly
sought after and many Football League referees never attained
it. From memory, I think you had to referee one of the FA
Competition Finals to receive an FA Badge. Now it appears the
"confetti" principle is applied t them as well

very audibly "what's that badge on your shirt ref, the *******
Tufty Club ?" He was quick to see yellow and was wisely
substituted not long afterwards.

If a player said that to me, he would see red (assuming the
deletion is an expletive). To me, that would be both foul AND
abusive.

If a player said that to me, he would see red (assuming the
deletion is an expletive). To me, that would be both foul AND

A red would have been justified certainly. The expletive wasn't
as bad as some and I believed that he was attempting humour,
albeit pathetically, so I chose a caution for dissent. I knew
the player quite well and although he moaned a lot he never gave
me any real trouble and I didn't feel abused. Added to which I
suppose I was well known to and generally liked by both teams
and didn't think the dissent would spread ( which it didn't )
and ....i always tended to err on the side of leniency for that
which wasn't plain nasty. Another day that comment might well
have elicited a red card from another referee, all part of the
glorious unpredictability of football as I would say to those
who complain about lack of consistency. So much of disciplinary
sanction depends on context.

A smashing explanation and highlights the importance of common
sense being applied along with man managment skills which are
still very important when officiating at all levels but which
seem to be being eroded in the quest to make top officials into
robots!
