I'm not sure that I would call Mr England's rise swift, as he is
already 35 - and certainly not as swift as it might have been.
He has, of course, had a spell as a FIFA assistant in the past,
but may find that he runs out of time to repeat that as a
referee. I hope not, as I have enjoyed watching his matches over
the last decade, or the first part thereof, but equally, I would
like to see Mr Jones promoted too. I suspect that he is younger
and so may have more chance to progress through the levels.

Is there any chance/scope for a referee being removed from the
FIFA list if England's 10 places have been allocated and a
suitable candidate is there who they are especially keen gets on
       the list.

Federations can nominate whoever they want (subject to them
meeting the criteria) so if they want a different referee to one
that is on the list they they just don't nominate him & nominate
a different referee in his place. Hungary removed Andó-Szabó
2/3 years ago and replaced him with Berke is one recent example.
Changes to the list only happen in January but changes to
categories can happen in January and July.

Fair point JCFC. I believe there is an admiration among certain
senior referees and ex referees that England gave up a secure
and very well paid berth as a SG1 and FIFA AR in order to pursue
a refereeing career and prove himself in that discipline as
well. He has done so and deserves much credit.

Could be a big problem for Jones and England. Not sure how old
Jones is, but I don't think he is as young as he perhaps looks
and thought he was well into his 30s. Taylor appears to be the
oldest English FIFA with Pawson not far behind, but they both
have several years left. If England's allocation is full, and
none of them are demoted or de-nominated, it could be a long
time before the new guys get a chance and could come too late
       for them.

Jones is the youngest ref in SG1 - I am pretty sure he is 33, so
about 2 years younger than Oliver, England and Kavanagh.

another potentially very fine referee, will have to wait until
the beginning of 2022 for his FIFA badge.

places. Is that right? So how many does Bankes' inclusion now
make? Is it 9? Oliver, Taylor, Pawson, Tierney, Attwell,
Kavanagh, A Madley, Coote, Bankes. Apologies to anyone I've
       forgotten.

That's my understanding too Whistleblower, but confirmation
would be appreciated. What's also interesting is the age profile
       of the current FIFA referees.
I think Taylor and Pawson at 41 are the oldest so in theory
another 6 years or so before they step down if they maintain
form and fitness. So, if 10 is the limit and Jones gets his
badge in a year or so, isn't the way blocked for other potential
promotions unless some of the current officials come off the
       list?
       [/quote]
That's a very fair point Ref Fan. It was always the case that
ages and timings had a certain element of luck inherent in them
because I don't think for a minute the authorities did any
serious forward planning when it came to potential FIFA
nominations. Yes, it will be hard luck on any young shaver who
makes a rapid ascent into SG1 as with Jones' elevation in a
year's time I don't think there will be a FIFA place available
until Taylor and Pawson leave the List which I had thought was
at 45 though no doubt there are possible extensions for the
favoured ones. Mind you, I suspect the number of allotted places
might also change so anything could happen.

Yes, but may be getting close to the cut off by the time FIFA
places become available. That was my point.

IMO the most logical move would be to take off the FIFA list
Attwell or Tierney. Attwell is 38 and Tierney 40. If they are
not promoted this summer to 1st Group (difficult), then they
should make room for younger referees (England and Jones).

Also worth noting Kralovec has lost his white badge altogether
for 2021, as speculated on here....
