It's interesting how quickly it can change - I remember a few
years ago there were complaints about there being too few
English referees on the FIFA list and how we weren't taking our
places up, and now we might only have one place left for the
next four or five years if the above is correct!
In many ways, I think it's more important to have opportunities
there for those who have the potential to go to the very top
rather than always trying to get close to filling the list. How
many international games has David Coote taken charge of for
instance? I think he's done well on the pitch since being
promoted to SG1 but not sure that he's ever going to be a Europa
League regular, let alone refereeing in the CL.

Just a thought, but I wonder if Riley is thinking of retiring
and wants to do so with a full quota of PL FIFA officials.
No, probably just wishful thinking!

That's my understanding too Whistleblower, but confirmation
would be appreciated. What's also interesting is the age profile
of the current FIFA referees.
I think Taylor and Pawson at 41 are the oldest so in theory
another 6 years or so before they step down if they maintain
form and fitness. So, if 10 is the limit and Jones gets his
badge in a year or so, isn't the way blocked for other potential
promotions unless some of the current officials come off the
list?

That's a very fair point Ref Fan. It was always the case that
ages and timings had a certain element of luck inherent in them
because I don't think for a minute the authorities did any
serious forward planning when it came to potential FIFA
nominations. Yes, it will be hard luck on any young shaver who
makes a rapid ascent into SG1 as with Jones' elevation in a
year's time I don't think there will be a FIFA place available
until Taylor and Pawson leave the List which I had thought was
at 45 though no doubt there are possible extensions for the
favoured ones. Mind you, I suspect the number of allotted places
might also change so anything could happen.

You should have two seasons in your domestic top league before
being promoted to FIFA status. The definition of "season" is up
to debate. Sweden gave potential FIFA refs a "try out" game in
their Allsvenskan the year before they got promoted, then a full
season and then they were promoted to FIFA status. There might
have been some changes here. But if I remember correctly, Jones
got his first Premier League games in 2019, so he might have
been promoted as well.

Is it still officially 45 or is that not permitted under
employment law? Kuipers is 47 but I'm not sure if that is due
to 'extensions'. Rocchi was 47 and didn't Atkinson get at least
1 extension? I expect edy can update us.

Just taking up on that first point, the PL is likely to see
several retirements in the next few years. Dean, Atkinson,
Marriner, Mason, Moss, Friend and Scott are all 50 or fast
approaching, and not all will continue as long as Roger East
did. Promotions from SG2 will be required. Recently, all
promoted referees eligible for FIFA have been given the badge
with the exception so far of England and Jones. It could well be
that future young SG1 officials, if good enough, have to wait
significantly longer to attain FIFA status than the more recent
ones. Of course, promotions to SG1 may involve some more
experienced referees who wouldn't be eligible for FIFA anyway.

FIFA relaxed the retirement age in December 2014 to be
implemented from season 15/16. There is no guarantee that any
referee will carry on after reaching the age of 45, it is not an
automatic right to carry on. Each referee will be judged on an
individual basis, once they reach age 45 and will need to pass
the fitness test and their merit markings will need to be within
the acceptable level, they also have to pass other medical
tests. Their Federation can nominate them for a +1 year in
October, which is when the nomination for the following season
go in. There is no set amount of +1 years they can have, as
long as they keep passing all the fitness & medical tests,
maintain their merit marks & their Federation continue to back
them.

'Contracts' are annual so as far as I can see no issue with not
renewing them
Would appear only Elites can be offered extensions as its
performance based (which kind of makes sense)

I have absolutely no doubt it will be England ( England ) as a
FIFA referee one day as well as Jones. England has been
certainly very swift in his rise up the ladder, and from all
that I hear, quite deservedly so as well.
