Ultimately this comes down to the interpretation given from the
higher-ups at FIFA/UEFA. In AFC (my confed), we have been told
that contact to the head with an arm will always result in a
caution at minimum to the offending player.
In both situations Benteke has jumped, and showing a disregard
for the safety of his opponent has used his arms as a tool and
made contact with the opponents face. Coote was positioned
perfectly in both incidents to be able to correctly adjudge both
situations.
Match officials can only be as 'good' as the interpretations at
that level allow, and for me, Coote has made two very good
decisions based on the interpretations being taught.

As it seems to be pretty anatomically impossible to jump without
ones arms coming out to give lift ( unless it is a sort of
'Riverdance' hop which is useless for attempting to win the ball
) then it would appear that jumping for the ball will now
gradually be eliminated by the Lawmakers. I rather object. Why
instead don't they invent another non-contact sport, give it a
new name and let football remain as it is.
Whether or not Coote got these decisions right under current
interpretations, as I still have grave doubts on the truth of
that, I remain of the opinion that he is an average performer
and cannot hold a candle to many of those in the present and the
past who have the honour of wearing a FIFA Badge.

One could also make a good case of saying that tackling is
potentially showing a disregard for the safety of an opponent
because sometimes tackles, even although not fouls, can result
in horrific injuries. So, the logical outcome of this reasoning
is to penalise all bodily contact in this new game which we
might call Passball.

I've only just caught up with the highlights of this one on
MOTD. As a Palace fan, I have some sympathy for Benteke and
Hodgson, there was clearly no intent in either instance, and I
imagine that a straight red would have been issued if intent had
been noted in either case. However I can also see where Coote
was coming from, given the current laws and interpretation. Ref
Fan - you wondered whether Benteke should have been 'subbed'
after the first yellow card? Well yes, that was a possibility,
we've seen it done before. But certainly the coaching staff at
Selhurst Park need to work on this issue with Benteke - as they
have had to do generally with 'hands-up' in free kick walls and
so on - otherwise he is going to have problems in the future.

Sadly, I think that this is the way that the game is going, and
has been for several seasons, at the behest of FIFA.
We are seeing a simple accidental trip resulting in cautions,
players planting a foot slightly in front of their opponent when
running resulting in a caution, good solid tackles being
penalised, player kicks the ball to clear and it hits his
opponent in the face --free kick given --so may other instances.
It just suits the agenda of those running the game and I fear
that Whistleblower's observations will prove correcct.

I guess jumping for the ball will become redundant as and when
heading the ball is banned he says tongue in cheek

I'll get brickbats for this but I wonder whether the DOGSO rule
(which most people seem to agree with) is linked with this to
some extent. It has always annoyed me that - under the original
version of the rule - an accidental trip, even with an attempt
to play the ball, resulted in a red card if it happened to deny
a goal-scoring opportunity (even if, viewed on its own, it might
not even have attracted a yellow). This has always seemed to me
a denial of natural justice. I appreciate that the rule has been
changed but we now have the arguably even more illogical
situation that an accidental trip outside the area results in a
red card (even where there is an attempt to play the ball),
whereas inside the area it does not. Yes of course the attacking
team gets a penalty, but logic suggests that the same foul
should be penalised in the same way or at least that the
offending player should be more harshly penalised for an offence
within the area than for an offence outside - instead it's the
other way round. I've always hated these aspects of DOGSO for
these reasons. Once you accept that innocent challenges can
attract straight red cards you are on the slippery slope to a
non-contact sport.
