Benteke's sending off
DIR By: Whistleblower

Caught this on MOTD last night and I could only agree with the
pundits. David Coote, an extremely average referee at best in my
view, has made two poor decisions. It appears that the
authorities are determined to make football a completely non
contact sport which is ridiculous. I saw little wrong with
either of Benteke's aerial challenges. I consider Roy Hodgson to
be a fair minded and reasonable man and I could only sympathise
with his view when he said the decisions were "very hard to
take".
Coote, for me, is typical of the modern breed of referee who
know the rules ( or at least a very draconian interpretation of
them ) but doesn't understand the game at all.
Referring to another thread about FIFA referees of past eras, it
is staggering that Coote now wears a FIFA badge. Has any
currency ever been so devalued?

Maybe so but having been cautioned for the first one Benteke was
naive in the extreme to do the same again.

So what are you suggesting? Benteke should have stopped
competing for balls in the air; he should have jumped with arms
glued to his side; or his Manager should have subbed him?

Being deficient in my understanding of terms for figures of
speech, whenever I use the phrase "(shot) narrowly wide" I am
uncertain as to whether that is an example of oxymoron or of
paradox. I am hoping that The Sage of St Albans, having coined
the phrase "extremely average", will be able to put me right on
this.

Coote has been frankly appalling all season, whether it be on
the field or sitting in Stockley Park behind a tv monitor.
As WB correctly states, FIFA badges seem to be guaranteed for
anyone who is eligible for one when promoted from SG2,
irrespective of how good they are.

As an undergraduate I remember my Tutor taking me to task for
incorrectly describing something as a paradox. He told me, a
logical impropriety remains a logical impropriety even, indeed
especially, when it is re-christened a paradox. So I am not the
best person to be advising as to the difference between that
which is paradoxical and that which is oxymoronic. I would say
'narrowly wide' is an oxymoron as is 'extremely average' .
As to the term Sage, I'm not sure I really know my onions enough
to be called that.

Thanks for the response - and for what it's worth I agree.
Purely as to the matter of figures of speech, you understand,
not as to your knowledge of the allium genus.

When you remember that the excellent Alan Wiley never made FIFA
it compounds the injustice even more. Enough said

I agree with Hendo but unfortunately Alan Wiley was already
"too" old when he got on Prem List. I believe it was under 37 to
get on FiFA. Grandad Walton was also (way) too old 😊
