How many more times does it have to be said, where the referee
is from is now irrelevant. It is based on who they support or
which clubs they have any allegiances to. It just didn't work
before, for example a referee living in London would be
precluded from officiating Arsenal, Tottenham, Chelsea, Fulham,
West Ham, and Crystal Palace if the location rule was applied
rigidly. That leaves a small set of games that they can take
on, and only hasn't been a problem as there have been no SG1
referees for a long time.

For the umpteenth time, Altrincham isn’t in Manchester.
It’s a bit like saying Haslingden is in Burnley!

He’s from wythenshawe which One could argue technically it is in
South Manchester albeit historically used to part of Cheshire.
The rate at which Greater Manchester is expanding the old
ceremonial counties are largely redundant!

But as pointed out by rustyref, it's not an issue anymore.
Andy Madley refereed Sheffield United at Southampton yesterday.
I know Yorkshire is many different Yorkshires, but it's a
similar principle.

Indeed - I am not disagreeing. I was merely pointing out that
Taylor is from Wythenshawe and not Altrincham

Fair enough, but he is an Altrincham fan, which sort of negates
the stuff at the start.
I do agree though; it's perhaps not the wisest appointment.

I think we are all aware of the policy - but that doesn't mean
the appointment is the wisest in terms of public/media
perception.
A bit like the government's policy with exam results over the
summer was using a scientific model that considered past
performance of the school etc. - but the public/media didn't
accept it so in the end it was not a n approach considered
reasonable or appropriate.

But that clearly wasn't reasonable or appropriate, As you say it
took in past performance of the school, not the student, so
agreed the media latched onto it, but it was flawed from the
start

I'm not disagreeing. My point is that the policy makers can have
whatever approach they like but the media/public perception
often plays just as big a part in deciding whether that policy
is considered effective, suitable or wise.
The PGMO were obviously quite happy initially to appoint David
Coote as VAR to a Liveprool game just a few weeks after
Merseyside derby - but of course there was a strong reaction
from people who weren't as happy with it and they had to do
their own U-turn in the end.

Do we think other festive fixture appointments will wait until
Monday now? I thought they'd come out this week in one big bulk
as they normally do, especially once the 2/3 Jan fixtures were
confirmed on Tuesday.
