G Scott and D Coote Arsenal vs Burnley
DIR By: ClaretandBlue06

Thought Mr Scott had a poor game at the Emirates tonight. Goal
kicks that were corners and also He kept getting in the way of
the play with the ball hitting him at one point, not sure he
needed VAR to send off Xhaka as it was right in front of his
eyes. Var 100 percent correct with that one Not sure what Mr
Coote saw with Elney incident though . Correct that it wasn’t a
penalty but it’s Violent conduct at its finest. If not then
everyone gets a free pass at whacking people in the face. Great
Result for the mighty Clarets though

I am not sure that Mr. Scott had the same view as those of the
VAR and TV cameras of Xhaka's apparent attempt to garrotte an
opponent. However I entirely agree that the VAR should have also
recommended an upgrade of the YC given to Elneny - like
ClaretandBlue06, I can't imagine what Mr. Coote saw to justify
no further action.

Unless I am mistaken, Mr Scott went to look at the monitor for
both incidents. On the first one he scrubbed the yellow and
issued a red, however, on the second one he just came back on
the pitch and showed the yellow, only he knows why he came to
that conclusion, particularly after seeing Martial dismissed a
couple of weeks ago for next to nothing.
The interpretation of the Laws in the modern game, along with
the introduction of VAR, dictates that these sort of offfence
must result in a red card whereas, in the past, the referee
could use common sense and would probably have issued yellows
and told those involved to stop behaving like children and get
on with the game. More often than not this would sort things out
provided that the players heeded the warnings.
What is happening to the game I loved?

As this thread hadn't been started at the time, I added a
comment on the Fulham-Liverpool thread, so I hope it's ok if I
re-post here.
Yes, Mr Scott in the limelight again tonight and David Coote as
VAR. Upgraded a 2nd YC to a straight Red for Xhaka after an OFR
but only showed a YC after another monitor review for what
looked like 2 hands in the face - with more force I might add
than Martial's light tap to the face against Spurs which Taylor
deemed a straight RC (and yes, I realise it could be justified
under the law - but VC, what a joke!). And my Blood Pressure
shoots up even more when I recall the provocateur and actor in
that instance got nothing, and when I see some of the incidents
since which have only produced a YC.
Is it just possible that after the Martial / Lamela incident
when several ex referees said it should have been dealt with by
a rollicking or a YC each, that Riley suggested they could use
just a little bit of common sense in that sort of situation?
Hmmm. No, on second thoughts, not likely at all.

I'm puzzled by what happened with the red card. I presumed the
yellow card was for the initial foul which looked fairly clear
cut but presumably not otherwise it wouldn't have needed
residing, so presuming it was for the offence he ended up being
sent off for (in which case, like with Tierney last week, why
not a straight red immediately if the referee has seen it?)
Scott didn't look at the monitor for the second incident. In my
view, a review should have been recommended. It felt like it
probably would have been if there hadn't already been a red card
but this should be something VAR can take a more clinical
decision on. I think Scott's process in delaying the yellow card
was poor here - the on-field decision should have been made
before VAR looked at it.
I don't think Scott has been too good this season and you have
to wonder if it's one season too many.

Ah, thanks Readingfan. There was such a delay for the second
incident in Scott issuing a YC, I assumed he'd been to look at
the monitor.
In that case, I agree. Coote should have been advising an OFR.

Thanks from me too Readingfan, I thought that he had looked at
the monitor, perhaps I was just amazed that Elneny acted as he
did.
He was a very lucky man to only receive a caution in this
modern age!

There is no way Scott is giving a yellow there from his
position. He’s miles away. Unless Neil Davies saw something.
Still think if arsenal weren’t down to 10 he would have been
given his marching orders.

I think it was assistant. Yellow card should have been shown
much sooner though.
I agree the fact Arsenal were down to 10 quite possibly had an
impact - but it absolutely shouldn't on a VAR. I'd argue that
was worse than the first!

I agree and I thought that it was worse than the first and was
exacerbated by the fact that Elneny threw himself on the floor
to try to make out that he had been assaulted. He was very lucky
indeed.
