Andre Marriner : West Ham vs Man Utd

A very good performance by Marriner personally I think he had
got better in the last few years his performances have been very
good and rarely attracts controversy
Yesterday’s game good fitness his foul detection was spot on and
played some good advantages, for the Pogba goal I attach no
blame to Marriner, and if I’m correct in my assumption that the
AR Simon Long would have have been looking out for a possible
offside soon as the ball left Henderson’s foot therefore it
would have been just unlucky that he missed it go out therefore
if that is indeed the case I attach no blame to Simon Long
either

He physically could not be looking in two places - which were at
a 90 degree angle to each other - at the same time.
I am sure if Andre had taken the word of the West Ham United
manager and awarded the throw-in, OGS and his crew would have
been cool with that ..... :o

Surely a linesman is there to see if the ball goes out of
play......it was blatantly out of play.....I used to run the
line at semi pro level and would be horrified if I missed that.
Where was var when you actually needed it...........rather than
getting involved when you don't??

So did I. I am not sure which would horrify me more .....
missing the ball out of play or missing an offside call
resulting in a goal? From memory, there were more of the latter
than the former that worried me.

Watching to see if the whole of the ball has crossed a line is
hard enough but trying to adjudge it when the ball is sky high
in the air is incredibly difficult. It was just about the
hardest thing I found when I was actively lining.

I can see why it happened, he's seen the keeper go long and
immediately turns to go as he know how rapid the Man Utd
forwards are. From where Henderson hit the ball it would be
extremely rare for it to go out and back in again, be he put so
much whip on the ball it did just that. It must have gone out
given how much it curved and how close it landed to the
touchline.
Don't see how VAR could rule on it as there was no camera close
to looking down the touchline and it would have been a guess
even if it was an obvious guess. I do wonder if the 4th
official could have had any input as the ball must have gone
over his head.

Perhaps you're right about your (and my) day but there are no
"linesmen" anymore!!! As others have said, the Assistant
Referee has far more to observe these days so an unfortunate
change of viewpoint at an unfortunate moment is to be expected.
However, I used to be quite adept at running backwards, keeping
play in full view. IOs that discouraged/disallowed these days?

Looked out to me, not Marriner's fault whatsoever. Surely VAR &
Simon Long could see the ball had swerved out?! Changed the
game in United's favour...

They don't have cameras in the right places. Plus the
technology for offside is looking at players body parts that are
on, or within 2 metres of, the ground. As opposed to ball that
is 10 metres in the air.
Really nothing that VAR could have done here.
