C BREAKSPEAR - Plymouth v Portsmouth

A decent show from one of the EFL’s card sharks... however I
still despise this rule for handball in the box when a player is
making an attempt for the ball.... it is so subjective.
Breakspear certainly looks very slimline these days, and his
fitness levels look a lot sharper than in the past few
years...plus it appears he has mellowed somewhat in brandishing
cards like confetti.

I thought it was a clear penalty under any circumstances. Why
would you jump at a ball with your arms in front of your face?
Excellent positioning from Mr Breakspear sold it immediately. I
still can't get used to his new body shape.

I believe that Breakspear has been knocking on the SG2 door for
a little while now. Quite why he never seems to make it when
they take people who have done barely a year in Divs 1 and 2 is
hard to fathom and leads me to suspect that there is more to it
that just refereeing ability. On his day Breakspear is a very
decent referee and deserves his chance at a higher level.

Long time lurker, first time poster here. Evening all.
There's seems to be some disagreement in the media sources
whether CB booked 5 or 6 players last night. Sky showed a
yellow card caption for Danny Mayor, immediately after John
Marquis was booked in the first half, but I think it may have
been a retrospective update for a yellow for a bad challenge by
Mayor after 2 minutes.
Soccerbase agrees - 6 cards - but everyone else says 5. There
was certainly no TV picture of CB actually carding Mayor.
I was just interested in how these things are actually declared
as official - presumably from the ref's report ?

Indeed, referees submit a list of names, so this will be clearer
in a day or so

Thanks.
FWIW, I thought he did pretty well, certainly didn’t stand out
as a clown. The penalty looked fair to me too. The Marquis
booking did seem harsh though - especially if Mayor’s early one
wasn’t penalised in the same way. The handbags at the end could
perhaps have been settled by a quick word and a handshake rather
than a double booking. But I’m no expert on the laws in those
circumstances.

Don't take Soccerbase as gospel; they just use whatever is
received by the Press Association. On a recent midweek there
were six refereeing changes, but Soccerbase had all the
originals, until some eagle-eyed Statto pointed it out...

Officiating really well for me. Looks confident and extremely
comfortable at this level.
Add his much improved fitness and I believe he is performing
better than a fair few at SG2 and definitely deserves his
chance.

Welcome to RTR, glad that you've joined us after being a
'longtime lurker'. I saw Charles Breakspear at my local club,
Crewe Alex, a while back and thought he was good, and I don't
remember him getting his cards out that afternoon at all. Good
to see our clubs on the up and I'm looking forward to seeing
Crewe v Crystal Palace (my other love) in the PL in the not too
distant future ;D
