Being kicked by an opponent because you got the ball first and
your opponent screams loud enough is now a foul?
He didn't see it and guessed. Declan Rice should have gone down
and a bit louder.
Aside from that, I thought there was a great deal of
inconsistency in his foul detection/threshold for both sides, it
wasn't surprising that the players were frustrated.

Yes was a poor decision followed by bas you say some very
inconsistent decisions, That's two poor performances from
referees in England's last Nations League games. Here's hoping
the Portuguese referee is better!!

Sadly, the free kick award is very much where the modern game is
going. He awarded the free kick, just as our own PL referees are
doing every week, because two players went in for the ball with
feet raised.
Yes, Rice won the ball and was kicked, however, as has been
pointed out on this board many times, the ball no longer matters
in the game of football and, for whatever reason, the referee
decided that Rice's challenge was a foul.
It was interesting to note that players from both sides who play
in the PL were wanting a foul every time they lost the ball and
ended up in an appealing, or should that be appalling, heap on
the pitch.
The monster has been created, we have to learn to live with it
as players try to invent more and more ways to cast doubt in
officials' minds.

Slightly off-topic, but I watched part of the 2012 PL game
between Chelsea & Man. United yesterday on Sky. A thrilling
contest which ended 3-3 with United being awarded 2 penalties by
Howard Webb. What struck me though was how much dissent there
was with players of both sides surrounding the referee at times.
A strong referee like Webb was able to deal with it. If
anything has changed in the intervening 8 years, my impression
is that there is rather less strong persistent dissent, but the
amateur theatrics have got worse, with in some cases fouls being
awarded far too easily. Sometimes we make comparisons with 30,
40 or 50 years ago, but more subtle changes can occur over much
shorter periods.
Can't comment on MR Makkelie as I didn't watch the game but I
thought he was regarded as one of the new FIFA stars.

Trippier was kicked in the head (albeit accidentally) which laid
him out flat and this clueless official allowed play to
continue. If he's the best Holland have got then perhaps Mike
Riley isn't doing that bad a job after all.

I have to agree, it is a point I have been making for ages.
Players are becoming ludicrously theatrical in acquiring free
kicks and penalties as it seems more difficult to score goals in
open play in this age of slow, sterile football. Feeling a
touch and collapsing because they 'have the right to go down'
does not make for a good spectacle.
Maybe I am being ultra cynical but I can't help feeling that
England's team selection is now so convoluted that they pick the
Premier League's most proficient tumbler in order to extract as
many set pieces as possible. It has got to the stage where
England games are just not worth watching any more.
