Yes, this is James Vallance’s first football league match. He
has been an assistant referee in the Conference Premier over the
       last few seasons.

Trial game or a mid-season promotion? I seem to recall Simon
Bennett being promoted mid-way through a season and that worked
       out quite well.

Neither. He was promoted at the end of last season

I believe he was actually promoted to the football league list
for the start of last season 2019/20. However, he did not
officiate in a single game. So he is well over due his debut.

I imagine Sunderland fans might have wished John Brooks had
stayed on their game v MK Dons. The penalty award by Stephen
Martin which led to MKD's winning goal was contentious to say
the least. I think someone must have had a word with Steve about
his running style, which seems much more relaxed than it was in
previous seasons, and that is good imo.

So all is good; his running style has improved and he is now
       giving rubbish penalties.

Or not giving obvious ones, as in Rochdale v Bristol Rovers.
