Even if it was accidental, and I'm far from convinced it was,
there can be no argument whatsoever that it endangered the
opponent.

Couldn't agree more. Clumsy it may have been, but at that level,
players should know and do better. Red card 100%. Ashington46 -
Brian O'Neill may have been 'hard but fair' but Digne was
certainly not 'fair' with his raking challenge, and I for one
applaud the successful moves by the authorities to clean up the
game after (as an example) the 1970 FA Cup Final Replay. If
Kevin Friend had issued a yellow card instead of red, would VAR
have intervened? I jolly well hope so, and I can think of a
similar example at Selhurst Park (can't remember the opponents)
where yellow became red following the intervention of the VAR.

I’m interested in peoples thoughts that Digne has had his ban
reduced from three matches to one match

I have to say that I'm puzzled. If a sending off is appealed, I
thought it was a case of it being proved or not proved, i.e. the
player was either guilty or not guilty of Serious Foul Play in
this instance and the ban would remain or be lifted. This seems
to be a halfway house/grey area decision. I could understand if
the sending off had been reduced to a caution but to uphold the
sending off and reduce the standard punishment seems illogical
to me.

Excuse me appearing gormless (nothing new there you may say)
I didn't see the game live.
Had Digne received a caution earlier in the game? If so then
downgrading the sanction for the challenge from RC to YC would
have made it a second caution and a one game ban?

No, he wasn't cautioned earlier, Phil. It was a straight RC for
SFP.

I'm confused too. They're saying it was Serious Foul Play but
not serious Serious Foul Play?
I seem to remember something similar happening with Matic
against Burnley a few years ago when he played for Chelsea,
although I think it was a 2 game ban.

I think the decision to reduce the punishment to a one-game ban
is very sensible (and I say that as the spouse of a Southampton
supporter). It has long annoyed me that the disparity in the
level of punishment for an offence which, if we are being
honest, could have been sanctioned with either a yellow or a red
card is so great - three matches for a red but simply counting
towards the totting-up procedure for a yellow. As in so many
other respects, Germany has a better disciplinary system than
this country, the standard punishment for a red being a on-game
ban, which is liable to be increased only if the offence is
deemed particularly serious. In no way was Digne's offence (imo)
particularly serious, even if it was technically SFP (there is
of course a separate debate to be had about whether the law
relating to SFP is right or should be changed).
I recall an incident a few years ago when Schneiderlin, when
playing for Southampton, was sent off for a minor slap to the
face of an opponent and had his three-game standard ban reduced
on appeal to one on the ground that the standard ban was
manifestly excessive. I guess that the Digne case fell within
the modern equivalent of that procedure. Perhaps Manchester
United should have done the same thing in relation to the recent
Martial incident?

Although I agree with your proposal/thoughts regarding differing
levels of Red Cards, I do not agree that this wasn't worthy of a
three match ban.
It was an intentional and cowardly challenge after failing to
illegally stop the player previously, that had the potential to
give the player a long term agonising achilles injury.

"Perhaps Manchester United should have done the same thing in
relation to the recent Martial incident?" Quite agree Irrelohe.
Totally absurd. 3 matches for a light slap (and that's probably
exaggerating) on Lamela's face with Lamela getting nothing for
instigating the incident and then the theatrics; and since then
we've had the Pickford incident with no action, and now Digne's
sanction reduced to a 1 match ban. Laughable if it wasn't so
serious.

I like our system in Hungary. YYR is a 1 match ban but all
straight red cards are evaluated by the disciplinary committee
on the Tuesday after match day and the ban is issued on the
circumstances and severity of the offence. There is no set
tariff for any red card so as an example in relation to the
offences mentioned above, a push to the face would more likely
get 1 match ban, the Pickford offence (if a red had been given)
would be at least 3-5 matches. One player squaring up to a
referee, no contact but was shouting in his face was given a 4
month ban & sacked by his club. If an assessor feels a red has
been missed, regardless of the referee report, that will also go
before the disciplinary committee and be reviewed and a ban can
be issued, even if there was no red issued at the time. The
punishment tends to fit the offence far better. That said
Frimpong only got a 3 match ban today for the horrendous kick to
Bacsa's head at the weekend! I thought it would/should get at
least 5!
The YC totting up is the same apart from we don't get a
break/reset date.
