       1945-46 not known (anyone have a F.L. handbook for this season?)
       46-47 245, 65 of whom went on become F.L. referees (not known
       how many of these were new to the line list as 45-46 is missing)
       47-48 239, 63 became refs, 28 of whom were new
       48-49 245, 51, 16
       49-50 273, 50, 18
       50-51 285, 61, 20
       51-52 286, 54, 15
       52-53 296, 56, 12
       53-54 305, 51, 8
       54-55 311, 48, 17
       55-56 331, 52, 15
       56-57 347, 56, 18

       I have a 45/6 handbook which shows 279 linesmen, of whom by my
       reckoning and according to Upton's, 44 made it to the middle,
       but 18 of that 44 never got past the supplementary list.
       That is on the assumption that the N C Taylor who appears on the
       linesmens' list as living in Leeds is the same man who was
       living in Trowbridge and then Westbury when on the referees'
       list . If not, for 44 read 43.
       I don't have a prewar handbook so I can't say how many of the
       279 were newly appointed-I imagine a lot after a gap of 6 years.
