Can someone explain the law on offside in the event a serious
foul is committed on the offside player please? I was
astonished that Pickford escaped without censure despite putting
Van Dijk out of the game - clearly endangering the safety of an
opponent??

If the offside offence occurs first then it it the offence
punished, as defined by the LOTG.

They couldn't give the penalty if the offside came first but
they could - and indeed should - have given a yellow card for a
reckless foul or a red card for SFP.
If it had happened the other way round (offside not initially
given) and a penalty was given and a goalkeeper given the above
sanction, then VAR could withdraw the penalty for offside but
the sanction given would still stand (presuming the red card
element wasn't a clear and obvious error.)

That wasn't my point. Peter Walton thinks it was a red card.
The offside is irrelevant - if a player is offside and a keeper
comes out and punches him in the face, is that OK because the
player was offside??

Several years ago I saw Mike Dean show a player a yellow card,
the player’s second, for a tackle after the opponent had been
flagged offside so I don’t understand why Michael Oliver and
David Coote feel no action can be taken because a flag was
raised.

He doesn't exactly have the best record when it comes to
decision making as a VAR official.

No that should be dealt with. The only difference would be if it
was classed as Serious foul play or Violent conduct. You didn't
mention what the incident was in your first post just that you
didn't think Pickford should escape sanction so I answered in
general terms. The offside is the offence dealt with because it
came first but yes of course a red card offence should be dealt
with.
I'm not watching it - I'm watching Budafok v DVTK! Budafok are
winning 1-0! Mr Iványi and his team are clad in blue shirts!
