Something to contemplate in the long winter evenings

According to the web-site of Russian FA that organisation has
signed an agreement with a respected Moscow university to
develop something called the Gale-Shapley algorithm for use in
the appointment of match officials. Given that events over the
summer have not enhanced the reputation of algorithms in the UK,
I will leave it to you to work out for yourselves the
opportunities for chaos that this offers. Though if Mr
Karasyov finds himself featuring in Pyramid Patrol, you will
know how it happened.*
The same article also lists the criteria for appointing match
officials, and I thought that these might be of interest. They
are:
1. The ranking of each referee (as determined by the department
responsible for match observers);
2. The likely difficulty of the match (determined by a committee
of experts);
3. Whether it is logistically possible for the referee to reach
the location of the match on the required day;
4. Whether the referee is suffering from any injury;
5. The region where the referee is based;
6. Current physical form, as determined by the refereeing
department on the basis of tests and reports from fitness
instructors;
7. Performance in weekly theoretical classes;
8. Progress in learning English.
9. Other individual limitations.
I am sure that you will agree that in the interests of
reciprocity the appointments given to Premier League officials
should depend in part on their progress in learning Russian.

I would suggest criterion number three should be moved up to
number one. If the referee can't get there, there is very
little point in considering anything else.

Do they have a version of Pyramid patrol in outer Siberia??

I like the idea of replacing Mike Riley with an algorithm,
perhaps he could get a job assigning "A" level / Higher grades?

Surely that would be in the Egyptian Premier League. I've heard
there's a few dodgy Gizas there though. ;)

Once upon a time, I acted as Referee's Secretary to a junior
league. May I add the following, for algorithm purposes.
A. Is the referee capable of refereeing above u12s?
B. Because his Dad is refereeing in the morning at Backofbeyond,
does he have enough time to take the referee to Overthehills in
the afternoon, as Dad wants his Sunday dinner first?
C. Is the match a morning or pm kick off. Referee Bloggs likes a
skinful the night before (p.m. games ONLY), and Referee Doe
likes his session in the Miner's Welfare Sunday lunchtimes (a.m.
games ONLY).
D. Two brothers, both referees, have just the one parental car
between them. Do you factor them back to back, or side by side?
E. Referee Leafe is Manager of a team, and, as your league may
kick off at anytime between 10am and 2pm, do you " best guess"
the kick off, or hold him back until you know for sure?,
F. How many referees do you hold back, awaiting the Tuesday
onwards excuses of 1. No car. 2. Gotta work. 3. Injured. 4. "Im
not travelling THAT far". 5. I sent a player off there last
year, and Manager hates me! 6. Mum says it's going to snow.
