C Pawson: Liverpool v Arsenal

How close to a red card was the Mane elbow in the 3rd minute?
Intentional movement towards the player with his elbow at head
height, ticked the boxes for me.
It was almost as if it was one of those dismissed as "it's too
early"?

I agree. Was it Gary Neville on Sky commentary who said "He
could be in trouble here"? That usually means he thinks it
could be a RC. I wonder what Pawson said to VAR as to his view
of the incident.
After praising Craig Pawson's form since the resumption last
season, there were a few instances I thought of free kicks not
being given that looked fairly clear, usually at Arsenal's
expense but that's not to imply bias. Was it Bellerin who in my
view should have had a free kick when blocked off on one
touchline and gets booked a minute or so later for a rather more
obvious obstruction on Mane by the other touchline? Frustration
I should think which could have been avoided.
He did put in a few fast sprints though, the lack of which in
the past has been criticised by the likes of Halsey and others.

I think the excellent advantage he played before Liverpool's
first goal (praised both in media and on social media, something
not often seen concerning a referee) should also be mentioned.

Fair comment, but the question as to why Mane didn't get a
straight RC is being raised more widely, and why VAR didn't
advise him to look at the monitor.
Having seen players sent off for less than a mild slap to the
face, I'm puzzled as to what boxes that elbow didn't tick. Even
Dermot may be hard pressed to defend that decision. The problem
is that if a referee is lenient with that incident, he may find
himself sending someone off for what some would consider a less
serious offence or 2 fairly innocuous but justifiable YCs later
in the game, and probably for the other team.
Hackett's in no doubt it should have been a RC, but I expect
that will provoke comments that it probably means Pawson got it
right!

Someone has posted this explanation on Hackett's twiiter blog.
"Was given a yellow, reckless use of the arm, trying to use body
position to gain possession and got it wrong, don't think it was
violent conduct so therefore not a red"
Any views? So a player can be sent off for unintentionally
kicking a player he didn't know was there, or for SFP for a bad
foul which was accidental, but just getting it wrong in this
instance is ok?

However, post this advantage does anyone else think the Arsenal
player should've been booked as well?

For me the Mane incident was nailed on reckless and not violent
conduct or SFP. Lacked the speed, intensity and force in the
collision to tick the boxes for a red I think Pawson was spot
on.
I thought it was a good performance I agreed with all of the
yellow cards he issued and he played a number of very good
advantages and a particularly excellent one for a Liverpool
goal. Some small issues with foul detection/consistency but
nothing major.
Long story short - A relatively easy game very well handled in a
quiet anonymous manner

Having watched it again at full speed, I'm not sure how it can
be claimed it lacked speed, intensity and force, but we'll just
have to disagree on that.
Personally I don't want to see players sent off, and what
bothers me is that we're likely to see players red carded for
less during this season as we have previously.

Ref Fan, I only saw the incident at full speed once last night
and then the few replays they showed. I will have another look,
it wouldn't be rare for me to take a few tries to get it right!!
On your broader point I see where you are coming from, but on
the slap to face point you raised earlier I suppose my take
would be that the laws and the way they are interpreted have to
take into account the difference between what can potentially
happen in the normal course of playing versus what is clearly an
act completely dissociated with the objectives of the game. So
yes while Mane would have seen red for a far less intense, far
less forceful slap than what he did last night, I can see the
logic of why this is so.

I guess a slap in the face generally has nothing to do with
playing the game so 'excessive force' could be more easily
justified.
I agree it was a good advantage and Pawson played quite a few
last night. One, presumably unintended consequence, of keeping
the offside flag down until an attacking move has ended is that
the defensive team often regains possession at that point and so
the game can continue giving it a greater flow (although a
possible downside is there's sometimes uncertainty about whether
or not offside was going to be given!)
