Just finshed watching MOTD, what are peoples thoughts on the Two
penalties incidents? For me there both same and not
penalties.Ball hasn't travelled that far and Hit Joel Wards arm
both times which was by his side and in a natural position for
me. One Pen given the other not.

Were Palace complaining when they got awarded a similar penalty
(player's arm away from his body) by VAR intervention at Old
Trafford last week?

Jonathan Liew with some great writing in the Guardian match
report on that:
“Around 10 minutes later, Lucas Digne tried to head the ball
into the path of Richarlison, only for the ball to flick Ward’s
hand on its way through. Play continued. Palace had an attack.
Everton won the ball back. Autumn turned to winter.
Joe Biden won the presidential election. Random parts of
Greenland continued to melt into the Arctic Ocean. Ward retired
and grew old. Humanity itself finally perished in the second
great conflagration. At which point Kevin Friend brought play
back, studied the video screen and awarded Everton a penalty.
Richarlison, by now a wizened, shrivelled stack of bones and
rags, tucked it into the top corner.”

Yes Roy Hodgson was quite sincere about it last week saying it
wasn’t a penalty. Same as this one today. Feel sorry for friend
because he has correctly waved it away.
Not a penalty for me and lawmakers are ruining football!!

The thing which makes it worse for me is the consistency aspect
because I'm struggling to differentiate between the two
incidents. I can't say I feel sorry for Friend because like
Taylor he has had a second look at it on the monitor and still
thaught it was a penalty.

I think that’s part of the problem jackinthebox. It’s great,
IMO, to see referees using the monitors more frequently, but
when will we see a referee brave enough to disagree with VAR?
It’s almost like if you view the monitor you must change your
decision!

or perhaps referees are only being encouraged to view the
monitor when it is believed they will recognise their initial
decision is incorrect.

Either way, it must be tricky, even for a referee of Kevin
Friend's experience, when someone recognised as one of the top
referees in Europe suggests that there is a possible doubt about
a decision.

The VAR is only meant to recommend an on-field review if they
believe an error has been made though so if the process works
correctly the referee should change their decision the vast
majority of the time.
I think the PGMO would consider the decision to give a penalty
in this game to be correct.

I totally agree Mackem ref there is an air of inevitability that
when the ref goes to the monitor the orginal decison is going to
be over turned.
