Being Able to Hear the Officials During The Game

Given the advances that have been made in other sports (I'm
thinking primarily of rugby union, rugby league & cricket),
where the officials' in-match conversations can be heard clearly
and consequent decisions being (usually) unequivocal, I do think
that football has a chance (in the absence of baying crowds) to
copy shamelessly and catch up - if only so that uninformed media
pundits' comments become a thing of the past. I suspect that
this isn't something that can be introduced unilaterally by one
country - it would probably have to have IFAB/FIFA/UEFA approval
- but it would make a refreshing change to be able to hear &
understand the decision-making process whether between the team
of 3 on the field or with VAR. It seems that the TV commentators
are able to hear what is being said when VAR is involved.
If I compare Toulouse v Ulster, Warrington v St Helens, Hull v
Leeds & cricket with (admittedly highlights on MoTD/MoTD2) the
likes of Chelsea v Liverpool and Man Utd v Crystal Palace ......
am I alone in thinking that things are avoidably chalk & cheese?

They won't do it in football because the poor pampered
premadonna players would have to stop being so potty mouthed. TV
companies would have to bleep out all of the cussing so it would
basically be one long bleep with an occasional word here &
there.

It might well have changed as in just about every game since the
restart commentators have been forced to apologise for bad
language caught on the microphones. Mic'ing up the referees
can't really make it any worse.

I've thought this for years.
At the very least, they should have the audio from VAR
conversations available to use live/retrospectively - I think it
would make the explanations of what they're looking at and the
reasoning behind the decisions so much clearer.
I remember the 2018 FA Cup final. The commentators at the time
were asking 'Why's that not a red card for Phil Jones?' but you
could clearly hear Michael Oliver on the audio that was released
explaining it was an attempt to win the ball inside the penalty
area.

I forgot to mention that, for most officials, the clarity that
this would bring would eliminate a great deal of the avoidable
stress caused by uninformed comments. Although it was at
half-time, the Dean/Bilic incident highlighted only too clearly
who was right and who was wrong as everything was clearly
visible and audible. I would particularly have liked to have
heard the Tierney/Oliver discussion at the end of the 1st half
in Chelsea v Liverpool - I immediately thought DOGSO and red
card because of the rugby tackle so there must have been a
reason for Tierney to go yellow. If Tierney was following
rugby's example, that'd be perfectly OK - except that the
decision in rugby is usually reached between the referee & his
ARs and the TMO after having stopped the game, rather than the
referee showing yellow & then asking for advice (or waiting for
advice) whether it should have been red.

It would bring clarity, especially with the whole VAR process.

a great watch. Even if you still agree with a decision you can
at least hear the thought process that has gone into it and the
professionalism of the match officials as they discuss it.
If they restricted it to just VAR calls, then it would/should
also solve the potty mouths not being heard, they shouldn't be
close enough to the ref during any review to be heard over the
comms!!
I remember a video UEFA released as well from the 2012 Euros I
think it was of audio between the AARs and referees that was
very educational especially for those who think AARs stand there
twiddling their thumbs for 90 mins!

Absolutely no reason why VAR audio couldn't be shown after the
event. It has been done in the MLS for a while now - see this
video:

They've even had live audio of the VAR conversation on MLS
games, so can't see any reason why some form of exposure of VAR
discussions in the PL shouldn't happen.

So very true, however, I have my own methods with televised
games. The sound always gets muted and I watch the game to the
background of Earth, Wind and Fire, Otis Redding, Weather Report
or any other vinyl which I enjoy played at full blast. It makes
for a really good spell of enjoyment.
