...although that phrase is prefaced by the words 'Except for the
above offences,'
And those above offences include it being an offence if the ball
touches a player's hand when:
touches the ball with their hand/arm when:
the hand/arm has made their body unnaturally bigger
the hand/arm is above/beyond their shoulder level (unless the
player deliberately plays the ball which then touches their
hand/arm

It really depends on which team you support! A penalty was
given, VAR didn't say it wasn't a penalty. no point in any
further argument. VAR rules!
Hendrick got away with one for Newcastle tonight though!

Interesting to read a report on a European based blog saying
Oliver had been excellent in a tough game, correct penalties,
correct disallowing of goals, perfect management, UEFA
equivalent marks from 8.4 to 8.7.
Handball is the area this year where we (the English) need to
adapt

It has long been the way that mainland Europe had a more strict
adaptation of the LOTG & England in particular has tended to be
more within the spirit of them. Handball they always completely
ignored the deliberate element & penalised everything.
Funny as England are having to toughen up and get used to more
of a strict interpretation of the Laws some of the Eastern
European leagues have been told to slacken off a bit, encourage
the use of advantages and stop giving out free kicks for every
bit of minimal contact!

Hackett is still pontificating that VAR should have intervened
and Oliver looked at the monitor to correct an obvious error.
What's the matter with him? He's still quoting 'not deliberate'
and the fact the ball was deflected means no penalty. Yet the
links are there on his twitter blog to Dale Johnson's blog in
which Rosetti's comments are quoted from before the 19/20 season
which make it clear that a penalty should be awarded in that
sort of incident.
Does Hackett not read or understand the 'Except for the above
offences' part of Law12? And if he bothers to read
Clattenburg's article in the Mail, he could educate himself why
Oliver was 100% correct.

I wouldn't hold out much hope for that. According to his tweets,
he is "still shuddering" after reading Clattenburg's
headline....

I think Mr Hackett is the one who needs to update himself on the
LOTG not Clatts (as told to by Hackett) particularly in regards
to the 'except for the above offences' part. Although I see
someone pointed out that part to him so he then says the player
was clearly trying to move his arm away ::)
Oh and Mr Rosetti is just stretching the interpretation to put a
spin on his own view!
I know which of the 2 I like, trust and respect and can
understand why that one is the head of refereeing at UEFA and
the other isn't!

Keith Hackett and Jamie Carragher are living in the world of
football in which I played and officiated and thoroughly
enjoyed.
The game has changed, IFAB have tampered with The Laws of the
Game so much that the game is becoming unrecognisable to us
older fans.
The decision of a penalty, under modern interpretation, was
correct and was backed up by VAR ---100% fail safe and what the
modern fans wants.
Mind you, if you watched Newcastle's game at West Ham you would
have to say that Hendrick got away with one in the second half.
No VAR intervention in this one.
I used to know The Laws of the Game and their interpretation,
however, I am becoming confused as to what the lawmakers are
trying to achieve these days. The latest instruction to ARs is
going to make the ARs look stupid because they are not being
allowed to flag when the offence occurs.
There are no fans at present, therefore, there is no abuse,
however, imagine these situations with 40000+ fans in the
stadium! No wonder officials are in short supply.

I'm embarrassed for Hackett - calling Gallagher 'a muppet', etc.
etc. Completely out of touch.
I had to laugh at his claim that the current head of UEFA
referees is just 'spinning things to suit his view'!
