Michael Oliver - Liverpool v Leeds

Penalty given to Liverpool, 1st look it hit an outstretched arm
albeit from a close hard shot, however on replays it shows the
ball hits the thigh then onto the arm.
Surely that is not a penalty unless of course they have changed
       the law again.
If not why no intervention by the VAR, oh wait a minute they
       dont like doing that.

Listening to it on the radio and they initially thought the same
but Sam allardyce thinks it was correct

BT have just said Michael OLiver said although it deflected off
his leg beacuse his arm was out its still a penalty.
So my criticism of VAR is wrong, but come on it can never be a
penalty, the ball would have nissed his arm comfortably without
       the deflection.
Not a good in my view, so every deflection onto an arm thas is
       stretched out is a penalty?

Sorry, but the penalty for handball was a travesty for the
reasons already mentioned. Oliver got a game winning decision
       wrong.

Sorry, but that's opinion dressed up as fact. I wouldn't have
thought a deflection would automatically rule out handball but
I'm sure there are referees on here who can give a more
       definitive view.
Why was his arm outstretched like that anyway?

How can it be a game winning decision when the score became 1/0
       and the game ended 4-3?

Dermot Gallagher on Sky Sports News the other and ESPN
journalist Dale Johnson said before season they expect a lot
more penalties to be given in PL this season for handball - it
seems the approach will be more along what we see in Champions
League. A few penalties not given last season were refenced that
they would be given this season if the hand is away from the
       body.

My final words on the matter. Law 12 "It is not an offence if
the ball touches a players hand/arm directly from the players
       own head or body"
