Kevin Howley was the referee in the UEFA Cup final in 1963
between Valencia and Dinamo Zagreb.
Does anyone know who his assistants were in that game ?

That question has been asked previously on this forum :-
HTML https://ratetheref.createaforum.com/i-spy-old-refs!/english-referees-linesmen-in-the-european-competition-finals/
However, I cannot see that it has ever been answered.
If anyone tries to research this further via old newspapers or
programmes, it is worth bearing in mind that this was a
two-legged final, and we are talking about the second leg :-
HTML https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1963_Inter-Cities_Fairs_Cup_Final
I have also just checked "The Times Digital Archive 1785-2014"
for details of this game, with my focus on the editions
published on Wednesday 26 June 1963, Thursday 27 June 1963 and
Friday 28 June 1963. The fixture and result are not even
mentioned therein and there is certainly no match report.

I'm working on a full set of refereeing teams in the European
Cup finals now and his is the only game with English referees I
don't have.
I have sent an e-mail to UEFA through the Norwegian FA, solet's
hope there will be some news in the future.

You could also try Neale Barry, Head of Refereeing, at the FA :-
Refereeing@TheFA.com.
I have absolutely no idea whether he will have easy access to
the archives, but presumably the FA would have held this
information at the time.

I will try that as well, but borth the Portuguese and the
Italian FA asked me to contact UEFA. I guess the level of
keeping the history alive is very different across Europe. The
Norwegian FA literally threw away all the old archives a few
years ago, and it was a major job recreating that for them when
they wanted it.

Thank you for reviving my post from the old forum. Yes, it is
still unresolved.
I note it has been suggested contacting UEFA. Even if you get
‘through’ to them (unless you already have a contact) they won’t
have the details – or if they do I will be amazed! You are
probably aware the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup wasn’t a tournament
organised by UEFA and as such they don’t hold any records.
Indeed, UEFA (for whatever reasons) won’t even recognise it as a
major tournament! I have no idea if any records exist for the
Inter-Cities Fairs Cup – possibly FIFA might have something but
again, I doubt it. The only ‘official’ record was a book
‘produced’ circa 1971 – “History of European Fairs Cup
Competition” written and compiled by Donald Ford and published
by the Executive Committee of the European Fairs Cup. I say
‘produced’ because it wasn’t, as far as I know, available for
general sale. It has no ISBN number or cover price. It has been
left to historians and statisticians to research it’s history.

A couple of question for spk:
Are you attempting to obtain sets of officials for all European
matches – all 23,000 + of them or are you only doing Norwegian
clubs?
You mention that the match in question is the only one you are
missing where there were English officials. I am intrigued to
know how and where you obtained all the others from?

I'm sorry for any misunderstandings here. I'm doing the official
statistics for the Norwegian referees for The Norwegian FA. And
there I have the full records for each European game and every
full international.
Now, during Covid-19, I started for fun with all the European
Cup finals. I don't intend to get each and every game played
from 1955 and up til today. Just the finals. And of all the
finals refereed by English refs - the assistants in Howleys
finals are the only ones missing.
A lot of information has been found in old programmes, but
several of those only list the referee and not the assistants.
But the information is out there - somewhere. And yes, I do have
my direct lines in to UEFA through the Norwegian FA. How much
work they will put into it, that I don't know. The tricky part
is the Intercity Fairs Cup/UEFA Cup with home and away legs. The
same goes for the Super Cup when it was played home and away.
The European Champions Cup/Champions League and the Cup Winners
Cup is almost complete after a couple of months work.
The full set of games is to be found online with referees, nut
there might be some errors there. But the assistants are not
mentioned.

Hi spk. Thanks for clarifying.
If you do get a positive response from UEFA (or anywhere else)
be sure to let us know here on the forum.
During any of your research have you ever come across an
Austrian referee named Stulla, who was active during the 1950's
- early 1960's. I am looking for his forename. He was
(according to the match programme) one of the linesmen in the
European Cup Winners' Cup Final of 1960-61 (Rangers v
Fiorentina).
N.B. Stulla is definitely his surname and is different to
another Austrian referee of the period, Josef Stoll.
