I was doing some reading, is it also true that at the time Tony
was ineligible to be promoted to Premier league group due to his
age?

At that time in the 1990s there did seem to be a policy of not
promoting referees to the PL list if they were above the age of
40. That did change later on, e.g. Eddie Wolstenholme and Clive
Wilkes in the early 2000s who were both close to the former
retirement age.

I think that Mike Jermey, 1981, subsequently became a Referees'
Appointments Secrtary in the London area - maybe on the Suburban
League ?

Quite possibly. Mike was a good bloke and a decent referee. He
came from my neck of the woods, Woking in Surrey, so our paths
crossed quite regularly. He inadvertently provided me with my
last ever middle, a Schools Final at Gillingham when he pulled
up lame after half-an-hour and I took over as the senior line.
