linesmen from 1963. I can't find them on the old board but I
have them in one of my files. Will add another time.

Any chance someone has the same information for the Scottish
League Cup (Scottish Cup and Junior Cup would also be good)? Or
can someone suggest where this information can be found?

Yes indeed, thank you for this very interesting information.
What strikes me is the fact that some referees received the
honour of officiating at both FA Cup and League Cup Finals
whereas some received only one. Since 2001 only Halsey, Friend
and Pawson have refereed only the League Cup Final and the
latter two still have a good chance of the FA Cup Final also.
Most surprising to me is that Brian Hill, who many people
regarded as one of the very, very best of his generation did
receive the FA Cup Final but not the League Cup Final. I find
the latter omission strange.
I think Mike Reed was unfortunate to get neither as indeed was
John Gow.
George Courtney, Jin Finney and David Smith were appointed to
the same major Final twice. I don't think this ever happened
with the FA Cup and I don't believe it would happen now.
Jack Taylor receive the League Cup Final a full decade after the
FA Cup Final. I wonder why the wait?

The fact that George Courtney was appointed twice was odd. Also
Stuart Burt got two line appointments and Kevin Friend was
appointed 4O after having refereed the Final. As for Finney and
Smith, it's fair to say the League Cup Final became much more
prestigious after it moved to Wembley, so I can understand those
appointments.

George Courtney's second appearance was in his final season and
possibly to mark outstanding service although there have been
referees before and since who might have also warranted that
honour. The early Finals were two legged affairs and that would
create more justification for using referees more than once.
When the finals transferred to Wembley those who had done a leg
in previous years were in contention again. Sometimes
geographical restrictions and desires to ensure other referees
got the Final before they retired might have meant some top
referees waiting longer than expected to be appointed.
As regards assistants having two appointments I'm surprised this
hasn't happened on other occasions as there are two spots on the
line for every Final. The same applies to the FA Cup Final
although given the greater prestige it might be felt best to
restrict it to one Final per official. Quite a number of
assistants have though done both major Cup Finals and it's long
been common for fourth officials to later be appointed as
referee. A couple of officials have completed the "hattrick" of
assistant, fourth official and referee in the FA Cup Final and
it may have happened in other competitions.

Yes, that is correct. After that Final, the PL refs kicked up a
stink and all later Finals were refereed by top flight refs.
Terry also refereed two Championship play off Finals, not bad
going for a career in the FL middle which lasted only seven
seasons.
