Officials in home counties amateur competitions 1945/6 to 1982/3

Some time ago I compiled a list of match officials shown in
Maidenhead Utd programmes, home and away, covering 1945/6 to
1982/3, which was taken from the excellent collection of
programmes shown on
HTML http://www.mufcheritage.com/.
Sadly that
site no longer seems to be operational so I thought I'd post the
spreadsheet file on here. I only listed officials whose home
towns were shown, but I did try to link subsequent appearances
by what appeared to be the same men, while noting any
discrepancies of initials etc. In one or two cases I may have
wrongly linked two different officials under one identity, but I
hope the list is useful to those who like to hunt down old refs
-the list covers the various leagues Maidenhead competed in,
plus cup ties.

What a wonderful list and what memories the names bring back.
I'll need to have a more detailed look but the 'top' referee of
the 1000 listed appears to be John Martin, then of Selsdon,
Croydon, who ran the line at Maidenhead as a young man in the
1960s, and went on to have a successful career on the FL,
including a League Cup Final. Mention too of Malcolm Cotton who
was on the line with me on the Isthmian League on occasions and
went on to have a less successful time on the FL. One notable
name missing - mine - but then sadly I never officiated at
Maidenhead. Thanks so much olddeagle, this will provide me with
hours of memories when the rain is falling outside ;D

Often you can still access some content on defunct websites by
visiting the Wayback Machine / Internet Archive
(web.archive.org), which saves snapshots of websites from
various times in the past.
eg: for the site you mentioned, you can go back a few years and
discover this link:

It can sometimes be a bit 'hit and miss', depending on how the
website was designed, but quite often you can access details,
which would otherwise have been lost.

Very little of that site seems to have been archived by The
WayBack Machine, but we can ascertain that as at 2 August 2016
(attached), the site was being run by Mark Smith from Windsor.
He is :-

I would particularly like to access the "League Handbooks",
which have not been archived.
There are some well-known names of the list of match officials.
These include John Abbott from Northolt and Tony Williams from
High Wycombe, both of whom were FL linesmen in the 1980's and
were Secretary and Chairman respectively of the Association of
Isthmian Football League Referees and Linesmen (AIFLRL).

E S G Bray of Hornchurch (118) is I'm fairly certain Eddie Bray
who was Referees Secretary of the Isthmian League in the mid to
late 1970s. I'm wondering whether W A Breeze from Sutton (120)
was Bill Breeze who was a top tennis umpire in the 1970s.

Another Referees' Appointments Secretary for the Isthmian League
who is on the list is Ray (R E) Parker of Forest Hill, who held
the role in the mid-1980's ; Trevor (T E) Powell from Finchley
was the Assistant RAS who dealt with linesmen's appointments at
that time.
Ray Parker referred regularly to his VAT squad - Mickey Vigus,
Clive Andrews and Mike Topping. They were three ex-FL linesmen
who were regularly entrusted with "tricky" fixtures. Another
well-known official listed is David Keen from Reading, who was a
FL linesman for quite a few years and a FA Licensed Referees'
Instructor.
Several of those listed also had roles in football and
refereeing administration. Keith Gibbons was an Oxfordshire
Senior League referee who spent about a dozen years as Hon
Secretary of the Referees' Committee of the Oxfordshire FA.
Meanwhile, the Hon Secretary of the Witney & District RA and the
County Training Officer of the Oxfordshire FA in the 1980's was
Mike Haggie.

Most of these were before my time, but I worked with / for Tony
Williams, John Abbott (I succeeded him as Secretary of the
AIFLR&L), David Keen, Mike Topping and others. Ray Parker was
my first Isthmian Referees' Secretary.

Do you have any perception as to how complete or incomplete the
collection of programmes was ? Having been fascinated for
several days by those who are on the list, I have now started to
think about those whom I might have expected to see thereon -
but they are missing !
Two surprising absentees are Bill Cleere and Dennis Hedges. I am
sure that there are others.

Do you have any perception as to how complete or incomplete the
collection of programmes was ? Having been fascinated for

The collection seemed to be quite complete for most seasons
although 1979/80 was missing completely and I don't think all
reserve matches were included.
However, I originally started making the list when compiling the
history of the old Bedford Town club, because I was looking for
those who might also have refereed Bedford matches in order to
confirm initials, home towns etc where I wasn't sure of them. I
therefore didn't include all of those I already knew about from
other sources, which probably accounts for the absence of names
you mention. I intended to go back and add such names before
posting the list, only to find I couldn't retrieve the site as
mentioned above. But I decided that incomplete as it was, the
list might be of some help or interest to others.
