       JP Doyle Redundant
By: reflector Date: August 20, 2020, 4:30 am

The Times reports that elite and international RU referee J P
Doyle has been made redundant by the RFU. One of 10 elite
referees Doyle is second oldest, only Wayne Barnes being older,
and a premiership ref since 2006 has a right of appeal. It
seems a strange decision and it would be interesting to hear the
reasons as 'last in, first out' is still regarded as the main
criterion. Perhaps one or two PGMOL employees will follow this
with interest with maybe the likes of Atkinson feeling a bit
       vulnerable!

As JP is one of the more articulate referees around these days,
I hope he'll find a media position sooner rather than later.
Unfortunately he had his own unique style which, whilst creating
more enjoyable games to spectate (& probably play in), made him
more susceptible to die-hards who don't like personalities. He's
not the first (James Jones from Wales a few seasons ago) & he
won't be the last. Whether there are "better candidates" depends
on whether others might make it onto world rugby listing - JP
has been there, done it, & then lost his position almost
certainly down to his Irish background and Mr Rolland. Whether
Spreaders backed him or sacked him will remain to be seen.

Unfortunately his drop off the international scene has probably
       been his undoing.
Barnes, Pearce, Carley and Dickson all went to World Cup, so
       would be ring fenced.
Next cohort would include Foley, Maxwell-Keys and Ridley all of
       whom have international potential.
To me the weakest referee in the Prem is Tempest, but he is an
international referee within the womens game, attending the last
WWC. I guess this has maintained his position thus far.
I would hope the Pro 14 do come and get the Irishman, Greg
Garner worked with JP so knows first hand how good he is.
I wonder how many pork buffets/hotel rooms/other perks he was
       worth.

The handling of all this leaves a lot to be desired but the
roots of this go back to before Covid when ERFU was struggling
financially. Expenses were being cut at grass root level, staff
made redundant, coaches expenses and such like slashed. Referees
mileage was capped so if you travelled further to get good
games, you only got a capped mileage. IMHO ERFU finances should
be investigated by the appropriate Parliamentary Select
Committee. Grass root rugby is suffering through mismanagement
and in particular the overspend in developing Twickenham. I
guess developing the women’s game too is expensive at a time
when money is short. I can imagine top referees wishing to
continue to be appointed to the big games having to take a pay
cut and JP saying foxtrot oscar.... JP is good but he was
unpopular and arrogant and it came over in his refereeing.

Several current and former top flight players (Andy Goode, Conor
Gilsenan, Jerry Flannery) have come out asking RFU to
reconsider, saying he will be missed and that Pro14 should snap
him up - so not sure where the idea came that he is widely
       disliked.
Think he's a great ref who lets the game flow

From watching clips of his refereeing, as well as various
interviews and one or two other pieces, he comes across as a
very likeable person with no hint of arrogance. Poor of the RFU
to be making him redundant and scrapping England Sevens while
its Council refuse to cut back on their own expenses.

There's a recent BBC rugby podcast which includes several
minutes of conversation with JP, who gives very little away. The
one thing that baffles me is that, unless I am mistaken, JP is
now unable to referee although I assume that means that he isn't
able to be appointed by the RFU whether as referee or assistant
referee or TMO. Perhaps employment rules are unyielding. How
that leaves JP being able to be appointed to referee below L4 is
hypothetical as grass-roots rugby won't be resuming for several
more weeks/months, but I do wonder whether the RFU can dictate.
