I see from the web-site of the Russian FA that David Elleray has
been appointed an 'independent special adviser' to the
Secretary-General of the Russian FA, Aleksandr Alaev, to add to
his already impressive collection of job titles.* I gather
that his task is to advise and assist with the implementation of
VAR. Whatever he and Mr Alaev end up talking about, I think I
can safely guarantee that there is one piece of advice Mr
Elleray will not be offering: 'Lie detectors? What an excellent
idea! We use them all the time at Harrow.'
*Technical director of IFAB, Chairman of the Refereeing
Committee of the FA, Chairman of the Belgian Council for
Professional Refereeing, member of the UEFA Commission for
Referee Development.
Ah, where would world football be without the input from English
schoolmasters (I use both terms advisedly)?

Thanks for the reply. The people I particularly had in mind
were Sir Stanley Rous and Ken Aston. I suspect that David
Elleray may be the last of the line, partly because
schoolmasters, as such, don't really exist any more (at any rate
outside the likes of Eton and Harrow), but also because the
upper reaches of English football seem to be firmly in the hands
of recycled media executives.

Unless Karasev has a P.O. match, it's strange that no Russian
referee is appointed since the start of the 2020-2021 season.
UEFA is certainly not happy.

There may be a more innocent explanation. Air travel into and
out of Russia is still extremely limited, and it may simply not
be possible for Russian officials to accept appointments in
other European countries.
Though I now see that Mr Karasyov has indeed been given a Europa
League play-off appointment.
