I liked Atkinson’s performance. Kept 11 men on the pitch and I
found little to disagree with. Two good sides imho who sort of
cancelled each other out, knew how to pass and from the
referee’s perspective got on and played the game with minimal
histrionics. Fulham may need to learn how to counterattack in
the premiership, a good passing game is good but they will need
more than that. Both teams were worthy of promotion. Well done
Fulham and good luck.

If goalkeeper jerseys clash and no change is available then
there’s nothing in the Laws to prevent them wearing them. I’d
have expected for such high-profile games that the clubs confirm
the colour of their kits including the goalkeepers but who
knows? One assessor tried to dock me marks for allowing both
keepers to wear green until I pointed out that the home team’s
yellow outfield kit was an identical shade to the away keeper’s
first-choice shirt. I brought him up to speed on Application of
Law while I was at it 😀

I thought Atkinson was exceptional. He used every last ounce of
his experience, where lesser refs may have panicked and drawn
attention to themselves with some rash decisions. He managed to
keep a low profile, whilst still showing 9 yellow cards, every
one of them warranted. A superb example of top level
refereeing. Take a bow, Martin!

Extremely good performance from Atkinson. His style suited such
an encounter. Lesser referees may have resorted to more
Draconian measures and become the focus of attention. Atkinson
has an understated authority but make no mistake, it is real
authority. He is the antithesis of flash and I applaud the way
in which he didn't turn "orange" cards into red to bolster his
control which was absolutely fine throughout the match.
Other FIFA referees, take note of this experienced and highly
competent official and learn from him!

I'll bet that Martin really enjoyed being in charge and he
certainly was in charge and ignored those few players who
decided to fall around from time to time. It is a shame that the
match did not rise to the standards of the officials.

Probably loved it even more because he wasn't laden with Big
Brother VAR looking over his shoulder...

Absolutely agree QuoCob. The last think this match needed was
some very inferior ( to Atkinson ) busy referee on VAR looking
at the "orange card" tackles and saying " it's red Martin, it's
red". When you have such a good official doing such a good job
then the very best thing that can happen is for him to be
allowed to get on with officiating without any interference.

I was pessimistic with Atkinson being in charge given his bad
omen irony toward Fulham. However I will eat humble pie and say
this was probably the best I’ve seen of him this season.
Plus without VAR yabbering away complete dross in his earpiece
for 90 mins, it’s clear he enjoyed it.
What he probably didn’t enjoy though was the handbags at the end
when Rodak refused to give up the ball and Atkinson was nearly
chucked on the floor in the resulting melee when trying to card
the keeper.
