Looks like white socks to me.
That aside only the brave or foolhardy would mess with Dave
McKay. Have to admit Bremner looks s*** scared! 💩

Indeed McKay looks extremely unhappy, but it was a very warm
afternoon as I recall as I was at that match, which could help
partly explain tempers flaring. On the socks, I remember
Burtenshaw usually wearing socks with very long white turnovers
and only swopped to the other extreme in the latter part of his
career. As I started refereeing a few years after this picture
was taken, I always thought the long turnover looked a bit
ridiculous but in this case you could argue it helped
differentiate between the Spurs’ socks of dark blue and white.
Apart from physical characteristics Timbo (thinking back to your
previous post), turnover length was often a way to recognise
referees - Roy Capey started wearing socks where black would
reappear at the top of the sock, as did Gordon Hill after the
FA/FL stopped him wearing all black.
Oh dear re-reading this makes me sound eccentric to put it
politely, but your post and the picture just prompted some
distant memories so apologies!

Norman was never a shrinking violet and there is a wonderful
picture in his autobiography of him wading into the fray of a
fight between Speight of Sheffield United and Hatton of
Birmingham City, something which would definitely not happen
nowadays. I wonder whether Norman is still around, he would
certainly be the oldest surviving FA Cup Final ref if he is. He
was a regular and usually welcome visitor to Selhurst Park.
Socks - interesting whether these are white socks or black with
long white turnover. I have to say I don't recall Norman being a
long white turnover man, and photos in his autobiography
certainly don't suggest he was at any time, so maybe these were
one-off white socks for some reason. I remember the Gordon Hill
saga as he turned up at Selhurst Park for a match wearing purple
socks. Perhaps unsurprisingly these disappeared from the scene
immediately after.
Uniforms - the change from 1950s/1960s outfits started in the
early 1970s and was led by Clive Thomas, with Ken Baker being
one of the last to change. Neil Midgley was one of the first to
wear all-black socks (with the tiniest bit of white pattern at
the top) and these were on display in the 1985 League Cup Final.
Neil was also one for wearing his shirt outside his shorts,
another practice which of course we don't see nowadays.

Brave indeed of Norman to intervene in a dispute between Bremner
and Mckay. I hadn't heard about the episode between Speight
and Hatton but he did come off worst at the hands of Millwall
fans when Villa had the temerity to win at The Den. I am not
sure if he wasn't knocked unconscious at the end of the game
but the unseemly episode did nothing to enhance the reputation
of the so called fans of the East London side.

I believe Norman, now 94, is still with is and is to be found at
Benhall, Saxmundham, Suffolk
