A mixed bag by Attwell I’m afraid, baffling decisions , and
moments where he seemed to be swayed by players on the plus side
he played some decent advantages on this performance Chelsea vs
Man City could make for interesting viewing

I think Palace are a very difficult side to referee, a very
experienced team, who are very "professional", they make sure
everyone knows when one of them gets fouled, and they tend to
make a lot of niggly fouls and they also probably know what they
can get away with when Attwell is ref.

A lot of whistle and inconsistency with cautions (Palace player
cautioned but AFCB player not cautioned for an exactly similar
foul), and as you say carrowman, Palace are a difficult team to
referee. Right result though and Eddie Howe clearly has
problems.

This hasn’t been the crispest of starts for the SG on the
restart.
I can accept a bit of rustiness and energy will play a factor,
however a few officials over the last three days have been
wayward in their performances.
Taylor wasn’t convincing in his game at the Etihad, we had the
dross from Moss last night and Attwell was wishy washy to say
the least.
Very inconsistent carding some other weird calls during the
game, and conversely some challenges were quite fruity which
didn’t receive the appropriate sanction. On another day Cahill
could have walked after cleaning out Josh King with an ankle
breaker.

In fairness, refs weren’t given the opportunity to referee a
friendly before returning - surely that would’ve helped!

Exactly that. This is like coming straight back into the season
without refereeing any friendlies, and is actually worse as the
break has been longer than a normal pre-season would be.
Players are understandably rusty, with everyone seemingly making
allowances for that, but referees will be exactly the same.
Three months without picking up the whistle is a long, long
time, probably longer than most SG1 referees have ever gone.

I would agree with the above about rustiness in players and
referees. I think (TTFL) that is what might have saved Cahill
from a red card. Call me biased but I believe Cahill went for
and got the ball and it was the inevitable follow through that
caught King on the ankle. I would not blame VAR Hooper in this
instance for not intervening and in fairness to Simon, he took
his time before deciding not to intervene.
I'd not seen any games before last night's. Are all the 4Os
wearing face masks during the games? I thought it was Coote on
4O duties at AFCB and it was only late in the game that the name
Tim Robinson was mentioned!

I really wonder just where the game is going when a cracking
tackle, where a player wins the ball fair and square, is
considered that it might be a red card incident. There were a
couple of other tackles made that Stuart Attwell penalised when
the players had done nothing wrong.
We are seeing players cautioned for other tackles when they have
won the ball fairly and squarely but the opponent goes to the
deck crying out.
It seems more and more that those running the game want it to
become a non-contact sport. It is becoming very sterile, thank
goodness that the NRL is available to watch and that the ball
seems to be as important as it always was, unlike modern
football where the ball is no longer relevant, or so it would
appear.

Agreed Ashington - personally I think a yellow for Cahill could
be supported. But the two cautions after that for Ward? and
Lewis cook were ridiculous. Both clearly won the ball great
tackles.
It was a shame as I thought up to then he was doing fine, some
very good advantages as well!
