Good referees instinctively know the difference between fair
play and fouls. I do not know very much about Scottish football
but I am in no doubt that Douglas Ross is a very good referee
       indeed.

You are too kind TTFL. Nothing much intellectual about me but
many, many years becoming practised at inferring things I
       couldn't say overtly.

Nothing intellectual about me either ........ but I do know what
       inferring means ! ;)

Quite right. Although I have done much inferring throughout my
life, the correct usage here would be implying. Thanks for the
steer. Dr Malaprop lives ! So long.

I'm sure there was no wish to cast nasturtiums as your grasp of
semitics is usually impecunious. I hope you have not taken
Ambridge and there is no case of high gudgeon.

JCFC, you enquire with your customary warmth and good humour. As
you might imagine I have consulted dictionary and thesaurus in
constructing my reply. Please do not think that I am, in any
way, discombobulated. I have a list of faults which would fill
as many pages required to write a three volume novel but taking
personal offence at being corrected in a pince-sans-rire way is
not one of them. I am quite content to let the dull mire of my
errors be a contrasting backdrop in letting the knowledge and
       sharp wit of others shine.

       ........and, of course, none intended.
Especially on an anniversary. As the Beatles once said "it was
20 years ago today" and my second most enjoyable of probably a
hundred or so trips to Wembley. I hope you were there.

Indeed I was m'learned friend. A great occasion, a great match
and a great result. I particularly remember how friendly the
Barnsley fans were and I have had a soft spot for the Club ever
since. A young friend decorated a T shirt for me to wear. A
white background on which was painted a lamb chop with the words
" Ipswich give Barnsley the Chop". Even after the match the
Barnsley fans were cordial despite their disappointment and a
couple of them asked if they could have their photo taken with
       me wearing the shirt.
Conversely one of the most awful occasions was 25 years earlier
at Stamford Bridge in April 1975 when we lost to West Ham in the
FA Cup Semi Final replay. Were you there that night ? I remain
convinced that Clive Thomas, surely one of the most over-rated
referees ever, cost us the match by chalking off two good
Ipswich goals. One was for offside where the Linesman, Bune
perhaps from memory, was in line with the last West Ham defender
and I was directly behind Bune. It wasn't offside, Bune kept his
flag down and Thomas, who was nowhere near in line, ruled out
the goal for offside. A poor decision from a much over-hyped
referee. A happier story three years later.
Such great days for Ipswich; it makes their present plight all
       the more sad and regrettable.

Not too much inferring or implying in evidence there!
