Been trying to research a quick little side project with who was
on duty for the first ever Football League fixtures on 8th
September 1888.
Managed to track down a couple of names but my research has run
dry.
08/09/1888
Stoke City
Wolverhampton Wanderers
Preston North End
Referee: Mr H. Brownlow (Halliwell)
Everton FC
Referee: Mr J.J. Bentley
Bolton Wanderers
Referee: Mr T. Helme

Bentley was John James Bentley, Sec. of Bolton Wanderers at the
time
Brownlow was Henry Brownlow of Halliwell, near Bolton
Helme was Thomas Helme of Farnworth, also near Bolton
no luck with the other two but a fortunate find of another kind

The EFL created mocked up teamsheets for their opening set of
fixtures, for their 130th anniversary.
I can't see the page on their website, as the link on their
social media no longer appears to be active, but if you view all
of their tweets in this thread, then the relevant details should
be there

Looked through various newspapers from the period, but as to be
expected the referee does not get mentioned in a lot of cases.
The EFL celebration did not list the 2 missing referees and from
what I have seen from newspapers the only ones known are those
listed. I did however come across the following in an article,
which I thought would be of relevance to some
Referees [1888]
Bentley JJ
Shaw W
Haslem WG
Earp FW
Brown HR
Johnson E
Heath W
Norris F
Fairhurst W
Wells WW
Albut
Bissiker W
Evans T
Chaplain A
Tillotson J
Ashwell AT
Daft RA
Lewis J
Ormerod S
Tooks D
Moon WH
Roscow JS
Cooper JBA
Hartley JP
Helme T
Hindle T
Nisbet J
Brownlow H
Byran T
MacIntyre J
Marshall W
Cooper A
Lythgoe RE
Lockett H
Armitt T
Horne J
Jope WH
Football League Officials :
W.Suddell [PNE] Treasurer
H.Lockett [Stoke] Secretary
In the various matches each club will take its own gate
receipts, but must pay to the visiting club the sum of £12. The
result of each match must be posted to the hon. secretary
immediately after the conclusion of the match on postcards
supplied. A list of 37 thoroughly efficient referees has been
supplied to each club from which to select for the various
matches., and in the event of two clubs not having mutually
accepted a referee the hon. secretary of the league is empowered
to send one. Referees from each match must be paid a guinea,
plus third class railway fares, and any referee consenting to
act in a league match must, in the event of his not being able
to attend, at once acquaint the club secretary, and not send a
substitute.
