Amazing refereeing decisions/games - through the years

Hello everyone.
In these scary (and quite boring times) and footballess times
thought I’d ask readers and contributors to share their views on
any refereeing decisions from important games: title deciders,
cup finals/semi finals, derbies etc.
My 1st memories are from 1999 FA CUP. I remember the original
game which was 0-0 when united had a goal tied out for a non
existent offside but elleray redeemed himself in the replay.
I have just been watching the 1997 fa cup semi final when
elleray again ballsed up when chesterfield scored and the
linesman flagged to confirm it has crossed the line but elleray
missed him. The linesman was Alan Sheffield.
My dad has just been telling me about some he remembers. He has
just been telling me about the Everton Liverpool in 1977 when
Clive Thomas ruled out a winner for Everton due to handball and
Liverpool went onto win the replay
Anyone else got any decisions that stand out?

Clattenburg when sent off Tony Hibbert I think for DOGSO in a
Merseyside derby.
He had the yellow out, then Gerrard got on his high horse and
then the red emerged.
This led to his demise at receiving Everton games at home for a
number of years IIRC.

I remember that game - he gave 2 pens for Liverpool but refused
an Everton penalty in injury time!

Going to break the mold here and not go for the usual tired old
here's one the ref got wrong narrative [emoji42] - enough of
those everywhere else, I'm going for a positive one instead
József Erdös - Can't remember the exact game but Mezőkövesd
Zsóry were the home team and it was fairly early in the season
(either 17/18 or 18/19). Attack on the goal to the right of the
benches, good defending and a striker kicked a defender into row
z, defence retained the ball & he played an advantage to the
defending team on the corner edge of their penalty box. Before I
could finish saying not much of an advantage to the defending
team there, they had broken upfield and scored! My tweet was
subsequently changed to "great advantage Mr Erdös" prior to the
what a crap advantage one had been sent! ;) When we watched it
back on replay (I was the only one who saw him play the
advantage in real time amongst the press crew & no-one else
believed me that he had...) we timed it at around 5 seconds from
him playing the advantage to the ball being in the back of the
net at the other end of the pitch.
Turned out to be an absolutely superb advantage!!!

I'll go along with you ajb95 about the Elleray incident in the
1997 FAC semi-final and the Thomas incident in 1977. Clive was
either very brave or very foolhardy. Who can forget Thomas
denying Brazil a winning goal in the 1978 World Cup when he blew
for time as the Brazil player headed the ball into the Sweden
net. And of course linesman Tofiq Bahramov who famously changed
the course of football history by indicating a 3rd English goal
in the 1966 World Cup Final. In the domestic game, Eddie Hughes
playing only 40 minutes in the 2nd half of the Palace v Fulham
game in 1978 when his watch stopped and he sought salvation from
the notorious stadium clock took some beating. On the positive
side, David Hutchinson for sticking to his guns and allowing
Arsenal their 1st goal in the title decider v Liverpool in 1989,
this despite a linesman waving his flag erroneously. And also on
the positive side, any referee at any level who has immediately
stopped play for suspected concussion and/or tongue swallowing
and thereby potentially saved a life. I applaud you all [emoji2]

Turning this on its head again - Igor Šramka’s superb spot from
the touch line of an Abel Xavier handball at the Euro 2000 semi
final between Portugal and France.
Extreme pressure of a decision to be made in Golden Goal extra
time to send a team to the final

I suppose it doesn’t get much dramatic than when Brentford faced
Doncaster on the final day of the 2012-13 when donny won 1-0 in
the last minute after Brentford had missed a penalty in the 93rd
minute
And then it was repeated in the championship semi final 2nd leg
between Watford and Leicester when Watford scored their winner
barely 10 seconds after Leicester had missed a penalty to go
through.
The referee on both occasions: Michael Oliver!

Season 2017/18
Match Day 33 - Going into the last game nothing in the league
was decided - league winners & 2nd place up for grabs as were
both relegation spots plus the 3rd EL spot to be decided. DVTK
were bottom on 33 points & playing top team Vidi on 68 points,
in 11th Vasas on 34 points playing Honvéd away. Honvéd were 5th
on 44 points and a win could see them take the last EL spot,
Balmazújvárosi were 10th on 35 points, they were home to
Ferencváros who were in 2nd on 65 points, Haladás in 9th were
also on 35 points, they were at home to Mezőkövesd Zsóry in
8th spot on 37 points. The only team with nothing to play for
was Felcsút, they couldn't finish in the top 4, nor could they
be relegated. They were in 7th on 40 points hosting Paks in 6th,
on 42 points. Debrecen were in 4th spot on 44 points, they
needed to match Honvéd's result to retain 4th & get the EL spot,
they were away to my Lilák, in 3rd place on 46 points. We'd
already won the Kupa final so were assured a EL spot, it was the
only thing decided, but we wanted a top 3 spot as well!
Ferencvaros needed a win and Vidi to lose to win the league,
anything else & Vidi would win the league. Vidi just needed a
draw to win the league. League winner gets a CL qualifying spot,
2nd & 3rd place go into the EL as do the Magyar Kupa winners. If
they finish in the top 3 then 4th spot gets the final EL spot.
Újpest, Honvéd, Debrecen & Paks could all still finish in the
top 4 so the latter 3 all with a chance of the final EL spot.
Any of the bottom 5 - Mezőkövesd Zsóry, Haladás,
Balmazújvárosi, Vasas and DVTK could still be relegated.
Absolutely cracking evening of football & the live table was
like a yoyo! All games kicked off at 7pm so you can imagine the
tension come 8.45pm and the final whistle nearing! Honvéd beat
Vasas 3-1, sending Vasas down and securing 4th spot for
themselves & the final EL spot. Elsewhere Lilák beat Debrecen
2-1, we had our 3rd spot, Felcsút beat Paks and they finished
6th & 7th respectively, DVTK beat Vidi 2-1 - was it enough to
stay up? Haladás beat Mezőkövesd Zsóry 1-0 to finish 8th &
9th respectively. Balmazújvárosi v Ferencváros had ended up
about 5 mins behind the other 5 games, due to a long injury &
hold up in the 2nd half. It was 3-3 as it went into injury time.
97th minute 94.08 on the clock with +4 on the 90, Balmazújvárosi
broke through and hit the back of the net, a win would see them
safe and DVTK relegated. Kóbor Péter AR1 flag had gone up
instantly - it was a tight call, literally mm's in it,
Szőts Gergely, a young inexperienced (and not very good)
referee had to make the biggest call of his career, go with the
AR, disallow the goal thereby saving DVTK and sending Balmaz
down or allow the goal. He went with the AR, who had called it
right (thankfully!). Final whistle went immediately! Vidi won
the league & got the CL spot, Fradi came 2nd and joined Honvéd &
Újpest in the EL spots and Vasas & Balmaz went down. They are
bankrupt & have been kicked out of the league this season, as an
aside!
Best end ever to a season in my lifetime! What a decision for
Szőts to have to make with literally the last kick of the
ball at the end of a season. He's an NBII referee, right level
for him but doing an NBI game. Huge credit to Kóbor Péter of
course who made the offside call as AR - replays showed there
was literally mm in it & he had called it right. What a cracker
of a decision!
