Sorry about that, Alitalia. Everything is a little quiet at the
moment, for obvious reasons. Perhaps few of us feel sufficiently
aware of European referees - particularly outside the Elite
Group - to be able to comment or offer suggestions.
May I however ask a question? The name Maresca was unfamiliar to
me - Wikipedia says that he will be 39 tomorrow, so as a
newcomer to the FIFA list, will he have time to reach the
highest level?

Fabio Maresca is a referee from Naples. Unfortunately Rizzoli
noticed him late, I have to blame him for that. My eyes saw
great ability and potential already from the lower series.
Unfortunately he's 39 years old, tomorrow is his birthday, but
I'm sure that Rosetti, who sees him refereeing in Italy I often
imagine, will find his skills in Europe too and speed up his
career. He is an amazing referee, he has a very strong
personality, he never bends, that makes him very strict. Extreme
elegance in his movements, an excellent athlete, he doesn't take
much care to manage the situation but to arbitrate it. He
referees and doesn't manage, for this reason maybe someone
slowed him down. But get ready everyone, I think he will explode
in Europe very soon. I think he might follow the Cerro Grande
route a bit, he too forgets in the drawer by Collina Pierluigi
from Viareggio !!!!
JCFC, get ready, he'll explode !!!
Here you can see him during derby Inter-Milan two month ago.

Another great promise, again according to my way of seeing and
interpreting, is the slovenian Rade Obrenovic from Ljubljana. He
is 28 years old. I saw him refereeing the friendly match
Italy-Ukrain, after a few minutes I was already on my feet
applauding him. He has sewn the dress of modernity, everything
you want from a referee today, the UEFA standards. Running,
dynamism, reading the match, movement, technique, relationship
with the players, he's perfect. It's true that the league isn't
very shapely but Skomi , Vincic and Jug came out of that school.
Then he has a great teacher, Mr. Vlado Sajn, a real referee
guru. By the way, he's always fourth man with Skomi and Vincic,
that's experience. Mark Obrenovic's name, he'll explode too.

I suspect the majority in England are pretty unaware of referees
not on the elite list because they tend to get elite referees
appointed to their games and simply don't see the others with
any degree of regularity. The Scottish, Welsh & Northern Irish
teams are hardly prolific on the International scene & I say
that in the nicest possible way - we don't tend to last in any
tournaments long enough to see many of the referees!
Love my Northern Ireland but we are not exactly renowned
Internationally & our domestic teams don't tend to stay in the
EL/CL qualifiers for very long! I don't watch too many domestic
NI games, Linfield in the EL/CL qualifiers maybe so although it
might be a Cat 3 or if we're really lucky a Cat 2 ref, so hard
to judge. I watch every Hungary International game & all of the
EL/CL qualifiers there so get a see a few of the potential
youngsters that way. I mentioned the 3 who have stood out to me
mostly from the past couple of seasons & our own 3 youngsters
who I believe have potential.
Most people though tend to just watch the big tournaments and
they're the elite refs by that stage.
