I only watch the NBI with any degree of regularity. My interest
in the EL & UCL tends to wane once the Hungarian teams are out,
so normally before the qualifying rounds are done! My interest
in the International tournaments, Nations League, Euro's & WC
tends to wane after Northern Ireland and Hungary are knocked
out, so again normally before the qualifying rounds finish!!! I
will watch our refs if they have a game.
Of our current FIFA refs - Bognár (Cat 1) - our top ref but will
be 42 this year so doubtful he will get the empty elite spot;
Vad (Cat 1) - 41 next month very inconsistent, simply not good
enough & injured 50% of the time;
Farkas (Cat 2) 38 years old - might make Cat 1, suits the
European game, reasonable & fairly consistent;
Berke (Cat 3) - promoted far too late to give him the time to
progress, he's already 36 possibly will make Cat 1, has the
potential to be elite but age is against him to get 3
promotions, his EL debut was flawless. Knowledge & application
of the LOTG superb & consistent, fitness outstanding,
positioning excellent, still makes the odd howler but it's the
exception rather than the rule. He should have been promoted
ahead of Karakó, if he had we would have the potential for a
younger elite referee in the next 5 years, now we probably won't
have one for the same length of time! He's a bit of a young
Clattenburg including the I'll do what I think is right & not
what the latest orders from above tell me to do, the correct
word escapes me right now! If told to ignore pushing in the box
for the time being, will simply refuse and penalise it anyway so
he's not the most popular in the Ivory Towers!!
Karakó (Cat 3) - can be excellent but that is the exception
rather than the rule, if he ever gets promoted then it will not
be on merit. Key match error in 4/5 games & marks on average
7.6-7.9 over the past 2.5 seasons. Inconsistent, poor decision
making more often than not, positioning reasonable - hated by
players & managers but appears to be a yes man... Lost integrity
with everyone but those at the top of the Ivory Towers last
season when he sent Király off claiming Király had sworn at him,
there were several appeal hearings where the recording from his
headset was demanded by the disciplinary committee. That
recording proved Király had not sworn at him and the appeal was
upheld. Should have been sacked there & then but the bosses like
him...
We have 1 empty spot and no elite referee since Mr K decided to
hang up his whistle and move to Russia! Unless Bognár gets
promoted at over 40 (unlikely) we will not have one either for
the next probably 5 years. Shameful legacy from Mr Puhl really.
I'm saddened by that, he was one of the best refs I've had the
pleasure of watching but he's not held that same excellence as a
manager. I wish he had applied the same standards of excellence
he applied to himself as a referee both to those referees he has
been in charge of & to himself in his new role. He started well
but after 20 years in the role we urgently need someone younger
& more dynamic to fix the absolute mess we are in. I think he
simply ran out of ideas or something similar.
Up and coming though, there are 3 very excellent young refs who
I mentioned above & credit to Mr Puhl for their development.
Bogár is 28, not 27 & it has already been announced he is being
put forward for his badge from next Jan, the earliest
opportunity to replace Mr K. He reminds me of a young Michael
Oliver.
Bence Csonka will be 28 this month, such a naturally talented
young referee, around 2 years behind Bogár in development terms
but I (and many who know more than I) think he will be the
better all round referee.
Ádám Pillók is just turned 29, slightly behind Csonka in terms
of development but it's between the other 2 for the elite spot
with him to take the 2nd Cat 1 spot. Excellent young ref but
slightly outshone by Csonka & Bogár.
If I was Mr Puhl I'd make the big hard decision this year. Clear
out the deadwood - Vad & Karakó, neither will progress UEFA
wise, promote Farkas to Cat 1, Berke to Cat 2 and put all 3 of
our youngsters into Cat 3. Gives them the time to develop, get
the promotions and 1 of them make elite.
Outside of Hungary, there are 2/3 young refs who impressed me in
EL/CL qualifiers in Hungary.
The Russian lad whose Dad is a UEFA observer, a young lad being
observed by Ray Ellingham - Manuel someone I think his name is &
Enea Jorgji - Albania.

But in all honesty I have to tell you that my real bomb, the
real big news in the coming years, is a referee who has not yet
arrived in Nyon but will arrive soon. He comes from Spain and
his name is Javier Alberola Rojas. I hope you have already seen
him refereeing in the Liga . He really represents the future.
Then I report two Italian referees, both very young and probably
promoted to Serie A very soon. One is Ayroldi Giovanni and the
other is Sozza Simone. Giovanni is the son of Rosetti's
assistant in WC2010.
With these two guys, together with Guida and Maresca, Italy will
once again excel. But it takes a little time

I watched Rojas in a la liga game earlier this season and he was
excellent: calm, clu fussy went about his business, didn’t show
cards around like confetti like some of his colleagues.
I think Rob Jones is one to watch coming through the ranks in
England. He will be on uefa in next 18 months. Below that I
think James Oldham will also make it in the next 5 years or so.
Not too clues up on the uefa refs coming through at the moment,
particularly those at cat 2 and 3. I’m
