Well, the aforementioned Maths teacher clearly did a good job of
teaching you the symbol for "greater than."

in the proverbial with his flag for who-knows-what. If it was a
penalty, then Stevens was in a much better position to judge
than Crafter on the far side. And it didn't look like offside,
even with the much more liberal interpretation of the offside
law in those days.

That he did & I am sure I will have given him some stick in the
following double maths lesson! "With respect Sir..." was a well
used phrase in those lessons! ;) ;D
Defending Mr Carter, from his angle I suspect he was partially
sighted, the lack of contact would have been on his blindside
and he would not have put his flag up if he did not truly
believe there had been a foul. He was very honest and fair
except when setting maths homework!! He called it wrong though,
no doubt. He would have accepted any criticism from the assessor
in good cheer & taken responsibility for it. I am sure we will
have discussed it at the time, he probably used it as a teaching
session for me but I don't remember any specific conversation
about it. I will add he did used to use the long car journeys as
a opportunity to give me 1:1 maths tuition & boy did I need it!!

“I refereed the 1984 FA Cup third round clash involving
Manchester United and Bournemouth.
“Bournemouth beat Manchester United 2-0 and when I returned to
the car park my headlights had been smashed on my car.”
I was at that game! His car was parked 3/4 cars away from Daddy
bmb's car. I was too young to drive then!
As an aside - I was parked next to Roger Gifford when he
refereed AFCB v Leeds in May 1990. Brand new car, nissan micra,
a gift from daddy bmb, picked up that morning and driven to the
ground. I sat in tears in the boardroom watching it go up in
flames after the match after some [emoji35] set fire to the refs
car! Loads of cars in the official car park were damaged that
day. I didn't know at the time it was his car, daddy bmb hadn't
wanted me to go to the game because trouble was forecasted. I
defied Daddy bmb who duly had me locked away in the boardroom
with a steward guarding me! Years later I met Roger when he was
assessing at Yeovil, I was there as guest of one of the
officials, we talked about that game & he told me his car had
been set alight and it had also destroyed the cars either side
of him - I replied yes one of them was mine! ;D

Some 'interesting' refereeing from Alan Robinson in one of this
afternoon's offerings, Everton v Ipswich, FAC QF in 1985.
Awarded an indirect free kick to the attacking side in the
penalty area for what would now be given as a penalty.
Disallowed two Everton goals for contact with the goalie
(minimal) which would not have happened now and then awarded
Everton a match winning penalty in the replay which would
probably have taken VAR about 10 secs to confirm that it was not
handball. On the plus side, he disallowed an Everton goal
because he had not blow his whistle for the free kick to be
taken and he sent off a player for a dangerous lunge which would
have earned a straight red now but was more commonly dealt with
then with a caution. I say sent off because there were no red
cards in 1985. Shorty shorts and lots of arm waving confirmed
that this was vintage 1980s refereeing! I wonder what RTR
contributors would have made of his performance over two games.
Much more accomplished performances from Gerald Ashby - Derby v
Sheffield Wednesday in 1993 and a younger (but not young) Martin
Atkinson in 2008 (Man Utd v Portsmouth), with the white hoops at
the bottom of the shorts.
Good to have a fix of classic football in these difficult times.
But what a lot of rubbish in the programme last night which
replaced MOTD. Gary Lineker, Ian Wright and Alan Shearer
discussing the greatest captains of the PL era. Hardly any
football. I switched off. Did Keane win? ;D

I'm sorry Acme, but I have to vehemently disagree with you. 2
key match incidents for Atkinson in the United v Portsmouth
game, and he got them both horribly wrong. Clear foul on Ronaldo
in the early stages of the 1st half. And it should only have
bene a yellow for the United keeper as Rooney and Anderson were
both on the goal line.
Glad t say he has improved since then. In fact, he has improved
considerably as I thought for the first 5-6 years as a PL ref he
was pretty poor!

One thing that stood out for me in these old games was the
assistants' positions. Pat Partridge had them at left back in
the first half, right back in the second and also had them
switch sides at half time. Brian Stevens went for right backs
first half and left second but kept them on the same side. It
all seemed perfectly ordinary back then but appears utterly
bizarre now.

There was a West Brom v Forest FA Cup game showing on one
programme with Tony Godden in goal for WBA. The referee got into
a position in the penalty area where he was between the striker
in the process of shooting (who was only about eight yards out)
and the keeper! Godden gave the official a right mouthful after
the ball was cleared for a corner... ;D

Ah yes, Pat Partridge, one of the best in the game at the time.
But in those days, referees at the highest levels were
encouraged to vary where they ran and stood to catch out
offending on the sly, and that included running to the goal line
and even standing on the goal line next to the goal posts. And
then chasing back to the centre when a goal was scored. All that
has largely disappeared as refs are encouraged (instructed?) to
adopt a standard running approach and standing position, working
much more with the ARs than they ever did in the 1970s.
Regimental yes, but better refereeing now in my view.

Worst fa Cup semi-final decision?
Atkinson in Chelsea v Spurs?
Riley in Everton v United?
