Cuneyt Cakir, Liverpool v PSG

The main talking point of this game seemed to be the chalking
out of a third Liverpool goal midway through the second half.
Cakir seemed undecided and the AR on the far side was chasing
back towards the halfway line when the goal was disallowed. TV
replays suggested that the AAR with the balding head was
instrumental in getting the goal disallowed and that the
decision to disallow was correct for a foul on the PSG goalie.
The BT commentators thought that the PSG first goal was offside
but I don't think it was.
Thankfully justice prevailed in the last minute and PSG went
home empty handed due in large part to their negative tactics.
A fairly low key performance from Cakir but then I don't think
there was a lot for him to do, with yellow cards correctly
administered and fouls correctly penalised. Liverpool penalty
for their 2nd goal was a no-brainer.
Steve McManaman wittered on far too much for my liking but I
loved his bit about the PSG fans working harder than the PSG
front three. How very true!

As the disallowed goal was scored my initial reaction was foul
and I was surprised they initially gave it. The VAR moved
towards the goal post so I think he was unhappy initially, it
just took a bit of time for everyone to understand what was
happening.
Overall a good performance by the officiating team I thought.

Good performance in my opinion, from the best ref in Europe. I
thought it was a foul for the 3rd goal, and was rightfully
disallowed.

Agreed much better than Turpin in the earlier game. Still think
the PSG first goal was offside. Cavani goes for the ball and
impacts the opponent.
Pretty sure the aar behind the goal got called Daniele orsato at
one point too!

With regard to the disallowed Liverpool 3rd goal, I don't think
the situation was helped by the AR (Duran or Ongan) chasing back
towards the halfway line as though his shorts were on fire. This
was picked up by the commentator as suggesting that a good goal
had been scored. It reminded me of times past when a ref and
linesman would almost race each other back to the centre line.
Those times are long past and the AR should have been alert (via
the comms) to the possibility that the goal would be chalked out
and held his ground pending a decision. Not good imo.

I thought from my seat in the stand that the disallowed goal was
initially given and that the decision to disallow was based on
the goalkeeper being injured. Having seen it on television the
decision was clearly correct it just wasn’t communicated as well
as it may have been.
Cavani was clearly offside when the ball was played in by his
team mate but it’s the low standard I’ve come to expect from
European Assistants. The one at the Kop end had all the presence
of a Club liner and missed two clear fouls (one for each team)
right under his nose.
Cekir did well though and put in more effort than PSG who must
be affronted by actually having to put some graft in unlike in
the training sessions that Ligue Un present them.

Ref my earlier comment about PSG's 1st goal, I now agree that
the PSG 1st goal should have been ruled out for offside. I don't
think Cavani actually touched the ball, but as he took a mighty
swipe at the ball and was in the goalie's eyeline, he was
clearly interfering with play and the goal should have been
ruled out. When he took a swipe at the ball, he was not in an
offside position, a defender having moved back, but that was not
when the ball was played towards him and if the AR erred on
this, it was a pretty fundamental error and would presumably
have been picked up by the observer. One for VAR I believe.

highlights, another example of poor time-keeping in a European
match - not that I was complaining!!

match restarted at 92:45 and he blew full time at 93:30!

Premier League wasn't too clever yesterday either - 6
substitutions plus an injury that took over 5 minutes for the
player to be stretchered off = 3 minutes time added on.

Rugby style timekeeping done independently is the only solution
IMO.
