Claudio Gavillucci, ex Serie A ref has been refereeing at county
       level in England. [emoji122]
Not that my opinion means anything but I agree with the action
he took in the Sampdoria v Napoli game!

Given the shortage of quality officials, maybe we should be
inviting him to join the National List next season.

Mr Gavillucci has had three appointments in the Northern Premier
League and is presumably refereeing at Level 3.

Without knowing what was being said, it is a dangerous precedent
for the referee to be passing judgement and acting on what
opposing supporters are chanting at each other. Things aimed at
the players certainly fall within his jurisdiction but between
       supporters ?

In the Italian press it said it was racist & discriminatory - I
have no problem with any game being suspended where there is
racial abuse, whoever it is being aimed at!

There are certain well-established anti-Neapolitan songs and
chants that are regularly heard whenever Napoli play in the
north of Italy. The regulations provide for the suspension of
games where there is persistent chanting which is either racist
or discriminatory, and these chants are deemed to come within
the latter category (the phrase used is 'territorial
discrimination'). It would therefore seem that Mr Gavillucci's
actions were entirely correct, and there seems to be no clear
evidence that links this incident with his removal from the
Serie A list. Indeed, Massimiliano Irrati took similar action
in a Lazio –Napoli game without it affecting his career.
Claudio Gavillucci appealed unsuccessfully against his removal,
but his appeal did not relate to any particular incident.
Instead it was on procedural grounds, and in particular the lack
of transparency in the assessment process.

There is an article in the latest issue of WSC (When Saturday
Comes) magazine (June 2020) about Claudio Gavillucci. It covers
why he departed Serie A and reactions to him in English
       non-league football.

I was fortunate to work with him observing young officials at a
       tournament in Paris last summer.
       A genuinely nice guy.

There is an interview with Mr Gavillucci in the most recent
edition of Venerdě, the Friday supplement to La Repubblica
newspaper. As far as I know, it is not available online; those
of us who shell out our €2 for the print version have to get
something for our money. The interview is linked to the
publication of Mr Gavillucci's new book L'Uomo nero, literally
The Black Man; it is mostly concerned with the perceived
deficiencies of the assessment scheme, though there is also some
information concerning the financial and contractual
       arrangements for Serie A referees.
