Richard Keys - Why Is Our Refereeing So Bad?

An interesting read. I don't like Keys very much, but he makes
some very good points. He is, imho, spot on with regards Riley
and the need for the man to be replaced, things will never
improve with him in charge.

Ignoring a couple of factual inaccuracies (I remember Mark C
doing a EURO final not WC) it does give a voice to what a lot of
people are thinking and have been shared on here.
Hackett was a bully boy and was as unliked by the rank and file
as Riley is.
They missed the chance with Alan Wiley as I thought he would be
perfect.

Well there is very little I can disagree with in that blog -
credibility can only be achieved if you are gracious to accept
when you are wrong and try all within your power to correct your
mistakes. Neither appear to be the case with the current set up
at the PGMO

I’m depressed that talking about referees has become so common
for all of us. Why on earth has this happened? How is it that
referees have elevated themselves into a position where we’re
talking about them more than we do the greatest game on the
planet?
Why on earth has this happened? Could it by that pundits and
journalists are frightened of upsetting their mates and former
colleagues, the players and managers, by criticising them and so
settle on another target; one that can't bite back? Far more
games are decided by the errors of players and coaches than
referees but the likes of Richard Keys always concentrate on the
errors of referees.

It's amazing how lengthy a blog post one can get from simply
stringing sensationalist phrases together!
Keys and Gray used to speak about refereeing just as much as
they do now. If they'd still been at Sky I'm sure the VAR stuff
would have been the main focus whereas I don't think Neville and
Carragher mentioned it at all.
Keys might think Keith Hackett was great and not be a fan of
Dermot Gallagher any more but I remember Gallagher sat in Sky
studios with Keys plenty of times around 2008 and Keys/Gray
didn't think refereeing was so good then.
I agree with him that things need to improve with VAR
implementation and some change is needed at the PGMO but it's
fair to say Keys' overall style is not to my liking really. If
he thinks things are bad now and the authorities have some weird
ideas, imagine how it would be if they'd implemented his notion
that the player fouled for any penalty had to take it!
