Harold Davey..
In research for the Notts book, I met with Harold's
Sister-in-law, in Pleasley, near Mansfield Woodhouse.
Four Nottinghamshire postings, and one out of kilter with the
times. I asked about that southern posting, and Harold's Sis in
law though that he was most likely chasing a promise, Harold
being reputably a bit of a ladies man.
A Ballroom Dancer, a Joiner, an owner of a hostelry, and, it
seems, an AA roadmap for when needs must.

Mark Halsey, when in Hertfordshire lived in Welwyn Garden City,
a somewhat different prospect than Hemel Hempstead despite both
places having their virtue[/font]
Sorry, Whistleblower - Mark Halsey was indeed at WGC initially -
not far from, but not the same as HH.
As regards those who caused us all to shiver in the distant days
of "Topsy" Turvey, Trevor Spencer comes to mind as someone who
would never play an advantage if it was possible to blow for a
free kick instead - and there was the aptly-named Les Burden -
but there were others...........

It's interesting how our memories of yesteryear referees are
different. I remember Spencer as just safe and boring ( perhaps
because he did keep a very tight rein on a match and awarded
plenty of free kicks ) but Les Burden as being a reasonably
sound 'toiler'. Burden went on to have a notable career in local
politics and ended up Mayor of somewhere down in Dorset.

Off topic but Ken Lupton (1985 to 1995) was another who achieved
high status in local politics. Starting at the bottom of the
rung, Ken became cleansing manager for Stockton Borough Council,
and having retired from that role, he later became the Council
Leader and Leader of the Conservative group on the Council, an
unusual transition for a Council officer.

Certainly agree with Burden falling short on the autological
front.
It was Poole.

Graham Poll started off in Stevenage, went to Tring then onto
Tilehurst before ending back in Tring.
Graham Barber started off in another part of the country before
moving to the same road as Poll in Tring

Upton refers to Barber as being from Guildford, Warwick, Pyrford
Surrey and Tring.
Barber was clearly highly rated, FIFA and FA Cup Final. On the
couple of times I saw him live ( and TV appearances ) his
refereeing left me distinctly underwhelmed.
His date of his appearing as referee for the FA Cup Final I
believe co-incided with his wife's delivery of their child.
Happily Mrs Barber's confinement so worked out that the two
events were separated by a few days.

I believe he was the first referee to do the hat-trick of
linesman, 4th official and referee at the FA Cup Final
