First half and I think pawson has been pretty poor. Surely there
must have been another/better referee available

It was pretty obvious what they were checking, especially given
De Gea's reaction.

Yes “van dijk made no effort to play the ball”
Even Gary Neville was bewildered by that.

It certainly looked as though Pawson was about to blow the
whistle for a foul then had a change of mind or thought that
United were going to make a decent attempt of making the
clearance.

Pawson seemed quite weak at dealing with the reaction
afterwards.
I don't think he's been as good in Liverpool V Man Utd or
Chelsea V Arsenal as some of the very best in England
traditioanlly have been. He seems at least a level down.

This is the problem though, they aren't being told that directly
by VAR and rather it is coming from someone who probably has no
refereeing background, probably a media person, and messages get
mixed up. There was one earlier in the season where the
explanation made no sense at all and was actually incorrect in
law.
Van Dijk jumped into De Gea and caught him, even if minimally
while he was off the ground, that is always going to get given
as a foul or at least it should be.
