Given the small number of refs in the elite group with var
experience orsato gets arguably the two most important games.
Personally I would have cakir or kuipers on this game!

It seems that Mazic was originally appointed to this match but,
having left UEFA, Orsato was brought in as replacement.

Indeed, he is. Makkelie is an expert VAR and has attended
various courses the last 2 years. Plus he is a very talented
referee. UEFA did the right thing to trust him a R16 match.

Another poor performance from orsato in what really wasn’t a
       difficult match to control!

He wasn't as bad as last time but he definitely seems a few
levels below the top referees - I am not sure I would trust him
with a place in the Euros next year based on this evidence.

I guess Oliver would not have been used for the quarter-finals
in any case given three matches involve English teams which he
obviously wouldn't do and the fourth game involves Juventus who
I can't see him refereeing any time soon.
I note that VAR is set to be used in the U21 Euros this summer -
I'm not sure if the referees have been selected yet but I wonder
if we might see a slightly higher status of referees used given
this, whether to ensure that it is referees with VAR experience
already or to give some of the more experienced UEFA referees
who haven't used VAR as much (Hategan, Oliver, Collum, Ekberg,
etc.) more experience with this ahead of its use in CL and Euros
       next season.

Oliver has been appointed to FIFA U20 in Poland (with VAR)

One presumes it will essentially be the 12 referees who were
used in the Last 16 round - it seems clear UEFA are using a very
small pool of referees with VAR experience.
I don't know if they will have 8 of them for the quarter finals
and the remaining 4 for the semis or if some refs will do both a
quarter and a semi with some of them not getting a game after
       Last 16.
