Not sure why you think he was 'still poor'. A mixed bag, yes,
but the early and costly (for Liverpool) caution of Van Dijk was
found to be correct iro the follow-through, despite the howls of
protest from the Liverpool management and fans, and the
subsequent caution of Koulibaly was also correct for the same
reason. Tendency to be fussy but that is probably more about
refereeing in European competitions than anything else. I could
not see much wrong with Skomina in what proved to be an exciting
game and I would be interested to see some evidence for your
view, Matt.

I wasn't too impressed with Skomina either last night, although
he was certainly better than in the Man City game earlier in the
season!
There just seemed quite a few minor decisions which he got wrong
or didn't seem certain about.
An underwhelming performance I would say - and I'm normally a
fan.

Some dire decisions from A Kulbakou in the Galatasaray v Porto
game on Tuesday night. Three penalties, the first two of which
were clear dives (the first in particular being embarrassing)
and a handball on the line being missed. Kulbakou should take a
leaf out of Paul Tierney's book in spotting and punishing dives
at The Emirates last weekend :-[ :-[

I'm not fully convinced by any of this week's appointments to be
hoenst.
I don't think that Lahoz is a good appointment for Spurs V
Dortmund at all. I think both teams play in quite a frenetic,
high-pressing way so you want an offiical whose style is to let
the game flow. I think Lahoz is generally just a bit erratic.
I don't think that Marciniak (or Skomina or Kassai) really
deserve a knockout stage appointment after some of their
decisions in the group stage - I know that any referee can make
a mistake (and I have rated all three very highly at various
times) but I think it's only fair that the officials who have
performed best get the knockout stage games and I think there
are at least a dozen officials more deserving on performances in
Europe this season.
I've never really regarded Orsato as one of the big hitters so a
bit surprised he's got that game - will Rocchi still officiate
internationally?
Makkelie is an excellent VAR but not fully sure about him as a
referee at this level yet - I don't think he was great in the
England V Spain game.
I suppose it is a sensible idea though to use officials from
leagues that use VAR.
