Future of the SG1

With the very hectic festive period coming to a close with the
FA Cup 3rd round, I have been reflecting on the current state of
the SG1. From what I can see, I have never seen the group look
as demotivated and run down as they are currently. Refs like
Atkinson don't even look like they want to be on the field any
more. Even Oliver and Taylor, our two leading officials in
Europe, don't exactly look like they are enjoying their PL games
at all.
Add to that the current age of some officials and the number of
years they have been refereeing in the Premier League:
Martin Atkinson - 48 years old, PL Ref since 2004
Mike Dean - 51, since 2000
Kevin Friend - 48, since 2009
Andre Marriner - 48, since 2004
Lee Mason - 48, since 2006
Jon Moss - 48, since 2011
Graham Scott - 51, since 2014
I just wonder how long many of these officials will continue to
referee at the top level. And more concerning, there seems to be
a lack of suitable replacements with the adequate
experience/talent in SG2 ready to rise to the top. Maybe a new
leader might be exactly what is needed to rejuvenate the group.

I would not be surprised if Mr Howard Webb is called upon from
the US, if/when Mike Riley goes.

The dross in SG2 is extreme to be perfectly blunt. There is only
Jones,England,Gillett and Robinson (unsure on the latter
personally) who are within earshot of promotion to SG1 when the
likes of the card shark from the Wirral hangs up his boots.
Langford is a long shot given he inadvertently got a game at
Chelsea, and from the national list certainly not Alan Young!

I don't necessarily think the problem is those coming through
from SG2 - as mentioned, there seem to be four at least at the
moment. Gillett is obviously very experienced already and I have
very high hopes for Jones too. I'd have more of a concern about
some of the SG1 referees going on too long than I would about
who would replace them if they stopped.

Certainly agree about Alan Young. I think Darren Bond and John
Brooks from SG2 might well be within earshot of moving up to
SG1. Jones, Robinson and England will all make it I think and
the first two before the third imo. Don't know anything about
how Gillett is doing to make an informed comment.

I defiantly agree Mackemref and I posted as much on the Mike
Riley thread before this thread was started and another one ,
Atkinson is obviously not enjoying it as his body language shows
it . Unless Riley goes I fear for the future of the SG1 myself

I would be surprised if 3 or 4 of this list did not go at the
end of the season, with the other going at the end of the next
season.
Could Atkinson be the person to replace Riley?

I think it would be Howard Webb, especially with how successful
VAR has been over in the US.

I was just flicking through some old posts on this forum and
found this a particularly intriguing read, and I have to say the
predictions on this thread in 2020 just before covid lockdown
procedures were implemented, were near enough spot on….
Alan Young hasn’t made SG1 yet though…. 😜😛
