Having watched the interview on Football Focus are we in
England so blessed with refereeing talent that the powers that
be can completely wash their hands of someone who has
undoubtedly made a mistake but had plenty of time on his side to
rebuild a career ?
Could he not have been punished by losing his SG1 contract and
all that it entails and be admonished into the EFL where at
least his undoubted ability could have been used ?
I would rather have a Bobby Madley refereeing my side than a
Craig Hicks.

I wonder what the HR policy would be on demoting someone for
such an offence or sacking them but then letting them return a
few years later (which is what Bobby Madley seems to be hoping
might happen.)
I would suggest that the ability of the referee - either way -
probably shouldn't really be taken into account when making a
disciplinary decision.

The reporter who interviewed Bobby Madley said on 5 Live
yesterday that he was regularly in the top 6 referees in the PL
rankings which I was a bit surprised about - I wonder if he was
getting confused with the fact that Madley was one of around six
English FIFA referees at the time?

Bearing in mind how the assessing/ranking system works ( or
doesn't work depending on your point of view ) I can well
believe Madley was in the top six ranking. At the time of his
fall from grace it's quite a feat to think of six referees who
might have been above him in the ranking. I suspect Atkinson,
Oliver, Taylor, Dean, Marriner, possibly Pawson but quite
possibly not. After that I'm struggling.

He was getting some big games before he was fired so I can well
believe that.

Perhaps I am indeed underestimating the lack of depth in PL
refereeing and I guess it depends what exactly is meant by
'regularly'. My general impression though was that Madley was
often quite unconvincing at first and closer to the weaker than
the stronger referees in the group (quite normal when someone is
first promoted - I'd say the same about Bankes to some extent
now.)
I think that 16/17 was probably his best season and he got games
such as Man Utd V Tottenham, Liverpool V Arsenal and Man Utd V
Chelsea but I don't think he got such appointments in other
seasons. Clattenburg was still around until Madley's final
season, you had Moss generally getting good appointments too,
solid referees like Friend and Swarbrick, and
Taylor/Oliver/Atkinson/Dean/Marriner/Pawson as mentioned.

I Thought Clattenburg left the season prior, Madley's final
season was 17/18, Clattenburgs last was 16/17 I think.
