Illingworth and Kettleborough not doing the calls for permanent
non-neutral umpires any favors today, with 4 decisions being
overturned. 3 for Kettleborough and 1 for Illingworth.
Incidentally all 4 decisions originally went against the West
Indies.
[/quote]
I thought it was two each as Illingworth certainly had two
overturned. An umpire's call went in the favour of England as
well yesterday.

At the time of posting, Illingworth had only one decision
overturned. Yes, he did have another one overturned later on;
again original decision went against the West Indies.

I wonder if the ICC might consider reversing the neutral umpire
decision - surely it makes little difference in a bio secure
environment as even English umpires surely won’t be allowed to
leave!

Atrocious umpiring again today. A clear as mud LBW not given by
Illingworth which was dead eyed straight on middle stump.
These two are having an absolute nightmare.. I would have loved
to have heard the late Bob Willis pouring his thoughts out on
the standard of umpiring from these two!

They have not been great but:
i) The cricket world is not hyper-ventalating over this. The
accepted view is that DRS has corrected the errors and we move
on with the game. Compare with football.
ii) The umpires have not properly worked for a very long time.
How good were any of us in the first pre-season friendly of the
season?

Well has to said a bit of a mare for both Illingworth and
Kettleborough especially. Both have another Test each, standing
with Michael Gough. Must admit I rate Gough highly (that’s
probably put the curse of death on him!)

For every test match three Elite level umpires are appointed.
Two of them stand for the entire game, a five-day stint of
(usually) seven and a half hours a day. The other one sits in a
comfy chair and gets involved when required.
Would it not be more efficient to do each day what is actually
happening for each test match during the current England .v.
West Indies series?
By that, I mean that Messrs Illingworth, Kettleborough and Gough
are standing in two matches and working the TV replays in the
other. How about they stand in two sessions per day and work
the TV replays in the other? It might make for less fatigue and
better decision making.

From what I saw both Illingworth and Gough had much better games
than Illingworth and Kettleborogh in the 1st Test. Would that be
a fair assumption?

Illingworth had a few questionable decisions - there was one
towards the end yesterday where he gave a WI batsman out caught,
but it had hit the pad and was nowhere near the bat and glove.

England v Ireland ODI series (played at the Ageas Bowl)
Referee - Phil Whitticase (England)
1: Alex Wharf and Mike Burns, TV: Martin Saggers, Reserve: David
Milns
2: Alex Wharf and David Millns, TV: Mike Burns, Reserve: Martin
Saggers
3: David Millns and Martin Saggers, TV: Alex Wharf, Reserve:
Mike Burns
So, weather permitting, it will be a debut for all three of
England’s new International Panel members. Not the start to the
international career that they would’ve hoped for, but here’s
hoping they go well!
