Entirely agree with you on this one Boz. A wretched decision in
my view by the normally reliable Anthony Backhouse to send off
the Bolton player as well as award a penalty. I thought the
rules had been changed to prevent this sort of thing happening.
At the other extreme, Trevor Kettle failed to award Crawley a
penalty v Exeter which looked nailed-on. Both decisions were
game changing. I thought the Morecambe red card was correct, the
challenge being wild and out of control. A friend pointed out
however that it followed a strong claim for a Morecambe penalty
which I couldn't really see, so maybe it was a case of revenge
which is never a goof thing.

In Law, it was DOGSO and he wasn't attempting to play the ball,
red card.

I suppose it's a question of how obvious the goal-scoring
opportunity was. If the Accrington player gets past the foul,
there are other Bolton players blocking the route to goal, is
that enough to negate the 'obvious'?

If that were the case, surely we would be seeing many more red
cards when penalties are awarded. Brighton v Leicester on
Saturday comes to mind. I'm with Boz again on this one, there
were covering Bolton defenders and it was not an obvious goal
scoring opportunity. I shall be interested to see whether the
red card is appealed and with what result.

I would argue that from the footage, which is my only reference,
the only player between the attacker and the goal was the GK.

.... indeed and there is no unit of measurement big enough to
measure just how much too big this match was for him. The worst
refereeing performance at Football League level for many years;
a performance where just about everything you would look for
from a referee, including especially even-handedness, was
missing.

I agree by far the most inadequate performance I have seen at
Portman Road over the past 17 years.
11 bookings, Ipswich 5 Wycombe 6, (should have shown Donacien of
Ipswich an obvious 2nd yellow, no booking for a double jeopardy
penalty against Chambers of Ipswich), two missed penalties in
favour of Ipswich one clearly blatant, disallowed goal which
should have stood (very strange as no flag from AR Mr Farmer but
when players lined up for restart Mr Young went over to speak
with AR and goal was ruled out for offside. Ball was played by a
defender). According to press reports comms not working was
given as an excuse), poor use (non use) of advantage, poor foul
detection. So much frustration from both benches and players. I
am positive a more experienced referee, with less whistle, would
have had half the bookings if that, as so many were borne out of
frustration, and we would have seen a better game.
I'm sure the much maligned Mr Kettle, who had a good game at
Portman Road earlier in the season, would have been a better
choice.
Having said all that neither team looked like promotion
hopefuls!!

In the 2 FL games I have seen from Mr young I have to say his
style is very haphazard which is why he probably gives out a lot
of cards!

The Farmer from Colchester, complicit in the ludicrous and
particularly poorly managed decision to rule out a perfectly
good and game changing (Wycombe would have had to stop their
disgraceful time wasting) goal, returns to Suffolk at the
week-end to take charge of the FA Vase tie between Stowmarket
and Stansted. Stowmarket is but a short distance from Ipswich
and I'm sure he'll get an interesting and deserved reception.
He was in disagreement with Ipswich earlier this year when he
walked off from an U23 pre-season friendly with Coggeshall,
unhappy with the playing duration and arrangements for
substitutes agreed by the two clubs. The match continued,
refereed by a member of the Ipswich coaching staff.

Also included the deserved booking of the Wycombe keeper for
persistent time wasting, but actually for a rare instance when
he wasn’t!
