Time keeping a stain on the Game (Chelsea v Ajax)
DIR By: Carter

The standard of timekeeping by so called top referees in the
game is appalling.
Clearly they are not up to it, even with a 4th official to help.
In this game we have had numerous VAR’s a penalty given and two
dismissals which took 3 & half minutes on its own, not
forgetting 4 goals and all the substitutions and it all added up
to 4 minutes.
If any game proves we need timekeepers then this is it.

He wasn't even close with the timekeeping; complete failure to
do his job properly. And a nonsense handball decision before
that too.
Basically, football would gain a lot from taking a leaf out of
ruby's book with officiating and so on - concussion substitutes,
independent timekeepers, show incidents reviewed by VAR on big
screen for fans and referee to see and mic officials up so we
can all hear them.
Maybe one day it will happen.

....... and maybe players pretending they are not hurt when
they are rather than the current pathetic reverse of that.

4 big decisions in the game: both penalties correct; both red
cards correct. And the goal ruled out for handball also correct
as per the LOTG.
Therefore we can say rocchi had a very good game; I would say he
had a terrific game!
I agree about the timekeeping and I have been calling for that
for a long time but there weren’t that many stoppages in the
game at Stanford bridge.
I think another minute would have been fine!

But any longer delay would have impacted the TV adverts, which
fund the Champions League :P
The impact of time keepers will be the stadium clock will stop -
no more added time, no more Fergy time.
And at what level would you bring in?

I just wonder whether any time allowance is being made for VAR
or whether it is being seen as just 'part of the game'. An
analogy might be the length of time it seems to have taken for
some of the scrums to be set up and re-set in the recent rugby
World Cup without (it appears) any time being added on.
Substitutions, injuries - yes of course, but VAR reviews and
length of time to get penalties set up - I'm not so sure.

It's clear, I think, that it's all done by guesswork at even the
highest level and I can't remember when I actually saw a referee
stop or start his watch (the last one I saw who used to do it
regularly was Alan Wiley). Also long gone are the days when the
linesmen would indicate to the ref how long to go by signalling
how many minutes to go by the fingers against the shorts method.
I can't think of a single argument against having time keepers
and it works well in both codes of rugby although I never
understand why in Rugby Union, they have to wait until the ball
goes dead regardless of how much over the 80 minutes they are so
I wouldn't advocate that. My fear is that, just like with VAR
and a lot of other things too, they will try to overcomplicate
it so what they do in rugby successfully simply doesn't work in
football.

The reason for that is so that full time doesn't happen in the
middle of a match changing incident e.g. a try being scored.
Imagine if a full time buzzer went off when the ball was on the
way into the net!

In ice hockey it is used at junior levers in Scotland - the club
at Ayr had a large portable stop clock that would be operated by
one of the youngsters.

No problem ---just ask Clive Thomas and there were no time
keepers or buzzers in his day!
If you want to have time keepers then the buzzer should signal
the end of the game, no matter where the ball is. Nothing in
TLOG which says that an official must wait to see if something
develops before blowing for the end of the game, so why change
it?
