Football League referees by season 1969-1992 spreadsheet
DIR By: Left Field
Date: October 18, 2019, 7:01 am
---------------------------------------------------------
A few weeks ago I posted a spreadsheet of FL and PL referees
from 1992 until 2019. This is the next instalment covering the
seasons 1969 to 1992. 1969 may seem an odd date to start but
marks fifty years ago plus the year when the Football League
reintroduced the system of supplementary referees (then called
"auxiliary referees") which all referees had to pass through
before joining the full List. As regards the codes "r" stands
for FL referee, "fr" for FIFA referee and "sr" for supplementary
referee. If you're familiar with using spreadsheets, e.g.
filtering and sorting, you can do things such as produce the
lost for a specific season. However if you're not familiar with
those things you can still view the results.
Many of these details are in Gilbert Upton's excellent book.
However this spreadsheet also has the first names of every
referee except one supplementary ref whose name has so far
eluded identification - S. Swain of Liverpool (1969-1970). FIFA
referees are also indicated. Final totals show the separate
numbers on the full and supplementary Lists. The number of FIFA
referees in those days was always seven per nation.
Where referees joined the list before 1969 or left after 1992
their whole span of seasons can't be seen but the start and end
dates at the end show at a glance when they were on the List.
The second tab (1969-2020) does show all the years and the
complete spans of more recent referees.
Just for reference and to show what can be extracted from the
spreadsheet by filtering here are the Lists for 1969-1970:

I have Stanley "Stan" Swain 1926-1992
of Penuel Road, Walton, Liverpool L4
President of the Liverpool Sunday Football Referees Society
1971-73
I asked them via their online contact form
if it was one and the same person
but I did not receive a response

Thanks John. I'm pretty sure that's the man in question. "Stan"
always seemed to me to his likeliest first name given referee
demographics of the time although "Sid" and "Sam" were also
possibilities. There's a slim chance that "Stan Swain" is simply
a namesake who was also involved in Liverpool refereeing at a
high level but it seems very unlikely. I also used the online
contact form but without a response which is unfortunate as I'm
sure they could have given a definitive answer.
That birth date would suggest that he was rather old to have
been appointed a supplementary referee (age 43 or possibly 42
when the season started). However it's worth bearing in mind
that all the 1969-1970 supplementary referees were "mature"
officials aged late 30s or early 40s - presumably the Football
League giving initial priority to older refs who might otherwise
miss out. From the following season (1970-1971) much younger
officials, e.g. Ken Baker, David Richardson, became
supplementary refs alongside older ones.

Thanks for this info LF. I have taken a look through the list of
72 names for 1969/70 (full list) and reckon I saw up to 40 of
them in live action, but only two of the supplementaries (Crabb
and Jolly). I could also give details of games I was at for most
of the 40. The most frequently seen refs at Selhurst Park were
New and Tinkler, and the only names from the 72 which don't ring
a bell with me are David Counsell and John Quinn; also Harry
Ellis is only known because he reportedly disallowed five goals
in a promotion encounter - Derby v Palace - in season 1968/9,
and Doug Fieldsend because he abandoned a game - Blackburn v
Palace in Feb 1969 - after less than 20 minutes.

Thanks for all your excellent demographic detective work John.
It would seem we can now close the case on this one and Mr.
Swain's first name is Sid. That also means that we now have the
first names of every Football League referee from 1969-1970
onwards.
The only media reference I've ever come for Mr. Swain was of a
match at Port Vale in September 1969 which praised his
performance. it's not often in any era that a referee gets that
kind of accolade. Of course that's just one report and for
whatever reason he didn't progress to the full List in common
with many other supplementary referees. I'm sure there were some
who narrowly and unluckily missed out and others who - dare one
say it - were fortunate to progress further. Sadly it seems from
your findings that he was one of those referees who died at a
relatively young age - just 50.

I imagine that Ken Dodd would have been tickled to see his name
on this spreadsheet!
