serving sanctions for the same thing? They have already had
their warning so should now face expulsion from all
international competitions for a significant period. As Greg
Clarke suggested, there needs to be a full investigation mainly
to determine what steps the Bulgarian FA took to deal with
their problem in this game but with such a small attendance it
shouldn't have been difficult to have sufficient stewards and
police in the stadium to nip such behaviour in the bud and
immediately remove the culprits. It certainly shouldn't be down
to the England management and team, all of whom behaved
impeccably and with dignity, to have to complain to the match
officials before any action was taken. The referee did what he
could but it is asking a lot of match officials to keep an eye
(and an ear) on the crowd as well as their football duties.

I thought Ivan Bebek was superb in his handling of it last night
and you are so right, it should not have to be up to him to have
to listen out for further occurrences. Unless he speaks
Bulgarian I'm sure a lot of it was missed by anyone
non-Bulgarian in the ground. I know the delegates are given a
pdf of flags/symbols to watch out for but if the abuse is also
coming in the mother tongue then people aren't going to
necessarily know that is what is being chanted and it is
therefore up to the stadium security imo to also point that out.
Bulgaria made a mockery of the UEFA sanctions, you rightly point
out they were already under sanctions. That really is taking the
pee big time. Why they were allowed anyone in the stadium is
beyond me. Hungary were also under sanctions for racism (anti
Romanian stuff) and at the last minute were allowed to have
school children under 14 in the ground with a few supervising
teachers as the only adults. Don't have a problem with that, the
sanctions were deserved. No players were abused, racially or
otherwise but there were some general anti Romanian chants on
the terraces. Actually it was great - the kids were better than
a cynical adult crowd any day but why were Bulgaria allowed fans
in or not treated the same as Hungary and only allowed U14s in?
The fact that the ultras sections were the ones closed and the
brief was that the fans allowed in were to be the regular fans
and not ultras, yet there were the ultras in the ground and
racially abusing players... Bulgaria have to take the
responsibility for that, they knowingly allowed the ultras in
against what was agreed. The ultras were the ones seen leaving
decked head to toe in black!

something which Uefa cannot go on responding to in it's usual
supine way. These racists are beneath contempt and all racist
presence at matches must be eliminated as a priority. I suspect
the only sanction which might work is elimination from
competitions. Very hard luck on genuine supporters but desperate
situations call for desperate remedies.

The regular fans don't get a look in. They were supposed to let
the regular fans in last night, not the ultras. It was the
ultras sections that were closed and the supposed family area
left open - yet there it was full of ultras.

As you all know I am not an English supporter as my roots are
Northern Irish. I support Northern Ireland and Hungary as my
now 2nd home but whilst I don't watch England normally, I always
want them to win because they are a home nation, same for Wales
& Scotland actually, I'm not into all this wishing the other
home nations would lose rubbish - I like to see all of the home
nations do well. Obviously if they were to be playing Northern
Ireland or Hungary then it's different & I want my teams to win
but I think you'll give me that one! What I will say is I was so
impressed with the composure shown by the England players last
night & I actually cheered when Raheem Sterling scored, step too
far normally ;) but last night I was just so proud of him. What
a fantastic way to respond to the vile racism his way and yes I
do appreciate he was not the only one subjected to it. To stand
tall, play his heart out and score 2 fantastic goals though was
the best answer he could give to it. Well done kid.

You make a very telling point bmb. I believe the issue is far
wider than just a few mindless, racist thugs. Last night they
weren't exactly trying to disguise who they were. Why were they
allowed in to what was supposed to be a Family area? The
Bulgarian Football and Law Enforcement agencies need to be
brought to account for their actions or rather lack of them.
Hearing excuses from the Bulgarian Coach " I didn't hear
anything, the English are just as bad" is, I suspect, an
attitude shared by much officialdom in Bulgaria. The word
"connive" has a variety of shades of meaning and I do not think
it inappropriate to use it in this context.
The International Football Community must act if the home nation
proves unwilling or unable to do so.

Fair play to the Prime Minister of Bulgaria, Boyko Borisov who,
unlike the manager, has condemned the disgraceful behaviour of
the ultras and has called for the head of the FA to resign. He
is cutting funding to the FA immediately until a new head comes
in & the problem is tackled seriously. He has also offered an
apology on the behalf of decent Bulgarians to the England team.
He obviously does not feel that the FA are capable of dealing
with it & wants to see changes. Good on him.

According to the Daily Mail, the president of the FA has
resigned and the FA headquarters have been raided by Bulgarian
police. No info as to why that has happened yet.
Krasimir Balakov should be the next to go, imo, after his
embarrassing denials post match & attempt to blame England fans.

Indeed, as awful as the situation was, such moments of extremis
do tend to highlight those whose personal qualities bring them
great credit and both Gareth Southgate and Ivan Bebek can hold
their heads up very high indeed.

Very disappointed with commentator Clive Tyldesley questioning
the suitability of the referee and observer to oversee the match
based on their nationalities. A form of racism in itself and
certainly an insult to the two men who Mr Tyldesley had
undoubtedly never met.
