       Millwall v Leeds United

I hold no brief for Leeds United and I wasn't at the game, but
how in the name of goodness is this a straight red? The penalty
       is also highly questionable btw.

Heard comments from Chris Kamara on sky yesterday so took the
trouble to view a video stream of the two key incidents Kamara
mentioned. First it was not a penalty Berardi made no contact
with Millwall player who either stumbled or dived. There was
also an issue regarding covering defenders. Therefore, penalty
and red card were both wrong. Leeds United have said they are
appealing the red card. Secondly there was an incident when Jack
Harrison appeared to be tripped in the penalty area. Video
showed he was but no penalty given. In both instances James
Linnington was in good positions to get the decisions right.
Three game changing decisions by the referee all wrong. Not good
       enough.

I think it is actually an ogso, if it's a foul (and fair enough
you can debate that). But there's no defender who can stop the
attacker taking a shot within his next two steps, in the middle
       of the penalty area.

I don't think it was a foul, more like a dive, and as it was in
the penalty area and a penalty was awarded, I would have thought
that a yellow card was appropriate under the new rules. Just a
thought, are we certain that the player was not red carded for
foul and abusive language (or whatever it's called now) or for
dissent following a yellow card? There did seem to be a time
interval between the foul and the red card.

Usually Mac I agree with you, however in this case I think you
       are wrong.
The 2nd Leeds player is in prime position to challenge and has
got the ball by the time the Millwall diver has hit the floor
Thought it was a poor decision at the time and seen nothing to
       change my mind.
Rescind the red, ban the diver and give James a bit of extra
       coaching

That's the point of the foul in the photo, don't you think both
defenders are to the striker's left? I can't see either getting
a block in by the time the striker shoots.
I know we are then into was it a foul, if so was it an attempt
to play the ball, upper/lower body etc.

It's questionable what the contact is, but it you give a foul
there it has to be a red card as without the foul he has an
unopposed shot at the goal with just the keeper to beat.
There's no attempt to play the ball either so you can't say that
it could be downgraded to a yellow to avoid double jeopardy.

       Was it a foul?
       Was there a covering defender?
Was there an attempt to play the ball?
In answer to the second question, if you stop the video at 0.03
then in my view there is no covering defender. The striker has
shifted the ball to the right and the defenders are to the left
of him so without the 'foul' I'd expect the striker to easily
       get a shot away.
In answer to the third question, the ball isn't really there to
be played by the defender so I think it's hard to suggest
there's an attempt to play the ball.
Therefore, if it's a foul I do think red card is the correct
decision (although I had doubts when viewing it for the first
few times and it's quite unusual to see a red card for DOGSO in
the penalty area these days) I don't think it is a foul though.

Sorry, but once the referee gave the penalty a RC was his only
option. Failure to do so would have meant he had failed to apply
law correct, with a corresponding downmark on his observation
       report.

I've been out of the system for a while. In terms of marks, does
the correct application of law in sending off the defender
outweigh the incorrect decision to award the penalty in the
       first place?
